I've never had much of a bug out bag which was a serious flaw in my prepping. I figured I could just meander to the basement and load up one of my big camping bags if I needed to do something, but as we all (and I should have) know, sometimes you have minutes to evacuate. So, after getting a good bag from CampingSurvival, I finally put one together:

Would very much appreciate some constructive criticism!

I like it. In fact, I'm taking ideas from your site as we speak! 🙂
The only thing I was pondering, and it's more of a personal thing...but having a rifle hanging off the side may cause undo attention, or issues if leaving around other people, or masses of people or with emergency measures/authorities nearby? This is totally dependent on the situation, location, etc. and obviously not applicable in all situations. But having a very visible firearm in your possession could bring unwanted attention/problems. Perhaps a way to conceal it better within the bag but still keep it legal.
I guess i'm thinking recently to what I heard some instructors say in Toronto. With the attention paid to people with firearms in Toronto because of the shootings and those who possess illegal firearms (spoiling it for the rest of us), and the small though vocal anti gun lobby people... Firearm Owners in public are essentially treated with suspicion and given a bit of a rougher time when carrying it with you. When transferring/carrying your gun, it's just easier to carry it in a trombone case, or something of simliar size instead of a gun case where you'll get looks, suspicion, and probably the odd police officer that will decide to stop you and eat up your valuable time.
You can't carry a trombone case in your bob I'd think, but perhaps less obvious placement of it. Just my thoughts though considering what firearms owners have to deal with today. As for that, like the setup.

Thanks! I think it's pretty functional.
You're right of course. The rifle scabbard attached to a pack was an idea i had after carrying a firearm at 'attnetion' for hours and hours during hunting. If you can put it on your pack and let your body carry the weight when you don't need it, then be able to draw it easily when you do, is the idea.
However, there are going to be bug out situations where having a visible firearm might make things not go so well for you. I'm going to work on that!
Thank you very much for the valuable feedback!

Can I pass along one little extra tip to consider - a tiny bottle of liquid dishsoap. You can use it to wash hands with just a drop, clean up your food prep/eating gear, and if you coat the bottom of your pan and the inside of your little Emberlit stove before you use it, the ash that builds up will wash right off - just be sure not to get soap in your food. 😉

If life hands you lemons, be sure you have a battery backed up juicer to make some good ol' fashioned lemonade! 😉

Thank you. I like useful things that take up very little space/weight!

nice setup.
if you dont have any in your first aid kit, think about a pain reliver. (shin splints are a pain)
when you think of clothing, dont forget a rain suit or wind breaker type outfit, great for all seasons.
i also have a ground sheet/tarp. many uses!
thanks for sharing
I put everything in my bag in ziplock or waterproof bags. they dont take much space and have double uses. Bring some tin foil as well. as a backup stove or for boiling water.
Other items i would recommend
- Fold up poncho - size of a few cards
- a snair or fishing line and hooks...does not take room and no weight
- Ranger compass is always usefull
- some water pills
- a wristband of paracord http://www.amazon.com/Camping-Paracord-Survival-Bracelet-Wristband/dp/B007JRS9I2/ref=sr_1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1363749650&sr=1-2&keywords=paracord
- and i highly recommend work gloves attached to the outside, they have many uses
- soap is a must as someone mentioned....
i will share my backpacks soon....as i have a wife and small kids

Excellent. She looks like she knows what she's doing. All you guys from that group do. Any interest in coming to our next Hamilton area meeting and sharing some expert tips?

Well, in that list I do have water pills and soap. The rest are good suggestions, thanks!

Hi Redneck,
Would your rifle fit inside the fabric carrying case of one of those collapsable camp chairs? If so you could probably jury-rig an inside frame to hold the rifle secure but have it easily accessible. Anybody looking at it from the outside would simply think you are you are carrying a camp chair with you. Just a thought.

I just ordered one of these for my BOB. Carrying a couple litres of water is a good idea, but if you need water for a few days this is light, versatile, and can filter some fairly questionable water!
http://www.berkeywaterfiltercanada.com/Generic-Sports-Berkey-Bottle_p_34.html
I wrote the company, and they said it has a 500ml capacity, and will filter 80L of untreated water before a filter change is required. The filter has a 50 year life span so it can sit in your BOB until needed without having to be an ongoing maintenance cost. Plus the thing is only $25 bucks...you can't even buy a case of beer for that anymore... 😆

Sure, feels like I'm one of those rare breed of preppers willing to travel anywhere in Ontario to meet other preppers (not saying that you're not). Just PM me and let me know when one is coming up. Quite busy these next few weeks getting seeds ready and keeping my wild foraging skills up to date but always willing to meet like-minded preppers.
