Wouldn't most pass out from the pain? If no alcohol or any other pain releavers are around it is a matter of numbing the area by temporarily tying just above the affected area off extremely tight. I am no doctor but I know I would rather have my leg cut off after sitting on the crapper too long as my leg falls asleep. TMI, maybe 😛
A little too much information? 😯 I think you need more fibre in your diet...just saying
Pass out a hopeful, die of shock a maybe. 😐

So everyone, are you planning to add people with the necessary medical knowedge (and practice) to your group?
Since the odds of me finding a doctor/surgeon to join me in my prepping is slim at best. I have started getting as much info on medicinal plants, first aid ect. as I can, because heaven forbid if something horrible was to happen to me i would most likely be the one who would have to take care of it 🙁 so i figure knowledge is my best friend and its better to know what to do then just guesstimating.

Doctors would be more inclined to come to a colony IMO than a few guys with guns and beans. I would think high protection for a doctor would be in his best interest since they are few and far between. Imagine if word got out that you were a doctor in a worst case scenario. If I were a doctor I would not advertise it. BTW do not expect medical personell to do much around the colony. They must be kept safe and clean and well fed.
A Doctor would be invaluable to have. Keep in mind though that much of what they can do today is based on modern diagnostics and machines. It would be far different than it is now and primitive compared to a modern standard. Keep in mind other "options"... RN trained nurses with real skills.. IE ER Nurses, Surgical and Medical Nurses as well. Paramedics and those with specific high level First aid. The majority of injuries would be cuts of varying severity, fractures and blunt trauma. Acute Disease would come 3rd so long as the group maintained a good level of hygene. I also think that "Medical" people should and could do their fair share of work. They would be important yes... but in reality no moreso that the farmer, carpenter, plumber or security personel. It is about community and group effort.. NOT about elevating anyone above others based on type of knowledge. Just my 2 cents.
The level of training that most ER medic/Nurse receive today would be almost as much as a GP/MD (General Practitioner/Medical Doctor) would be 200 years ago. Match that with a herbalist, and your cooking.

dang it I wish I were a DR. I'd be soooo in demand!
We have an EMT in training who is a part of our group. Also, something that no one has mentioned is vets. A good many country vets have been known to treat people. In fact, as part of their schooling, vets are required to spend a certain amount of time in medical school (so I understand).
Who would be great to have as part of your group would be a SARtech. Those guys are practically legends in the military. Generally there is a about a 6 year waiting period to get into SARtech training and by the time they're ready to deploy, they can practically perform surgery on a ship deck during a typhoon.

I'll go back to my original question "So everyone, are you planning to add people with the necessary medical knowledge (and practice) to your group?" If not how, about getting at least some knowledge and skills for yourselves as an alternative?
Getting at least some kind of first aid training is essential and the more the better. I spent 6 years as a workplace first responder and my wife went through nursing school, although never became an RN. We have numerous medical books and feel confident that our skills will help in SHTF scenarios. I would consider someone with a medical background very valuable indeed. If you could have an actual doctor join your group, this would not only help after SHTF, but in prepping also, as a doctor could write prescriptions for meds that could be stored such as antibiotics or painkillers.
Well, I guess Clove Oil would be invaluable! it's used as a topical local anesthetic, fairly effectively, tooth aches and such. But, between that and willow bark (similar to aspirin) any real surgery would likely be nothing but a death deal of Russian roulette, if you could find someone that can do the surgery, you'd still have to gamble on if they where any good and if you'd even survive the aftermath of some unclean conditions without antibiotics. Antibiotics is the one thing that so many of us forget how important they are, especially after a SHTF scenario, and not having easy access to "stock" up unless you keep prescriptions, I can imagine how valuable they'll become. A few prepper's know where and how to get an easy supply, and a lot of antibiotics that can be taken by humans, but there is a lot of people that don't know, and those are the ones I'm scared of.
I'm thinking things will be a similar to a lot of places in the world today, like Afghanistan, Pakistan and other wore torn countries. There's still a lot of cultures that have no electricity or modern "luxuries" and are just fine. I would think that's what we will be in for, a serious shift in "haves and have not's" until the stabilization of society, but I doubt that will happen anytime in the first 3 yrs. The first 3 yrs, I see similar to a world like the movie "The Book of Eli" with Denzel Washington. I can assume that in that time many many people will be desperate and the world will be in a era similar to Medieval Times but there will be no Knight in Shining armor or Robin Hood's. I wish I had more faith in human kind, but fear is not something that brings the best out in our species. Wild west with Medieval times thrown in.
I'll go back to my original question "So everyone, are you planning to add people with the necessary medical knowledge (and practice) to your group?" If not how, about getting at least some knowledge and skills for yourselves as an alternative?
The answer is, Of course, but it will be the same as playing the lottery trying to find one. I'd even take a Veterinarian. Combat first aid I have had, but haven't tried stitching a chicken in years.
