I dont really get why people would care how the lamestream media portrays us. The way I see it the more they try to show us in a negative light means we are more on the right track.

IMO government gains more and more power by making people more and more dependent on them. So you can see why in the mainstream a prepping lifestyle will be portrayed in not the best light.

Also I would not put much stock in a Vanderbilt with a show on CiaNN.

I would have to respectfully disagree with you on that one redlite. The more positive our reputation in the mainstream media, the more sheeple will likely wake up and at least prepare somewhat. The more prepared people there are, the less zombies knocking at your door.

If the media continues to display preppers at nutjobs, then the less likely people will become self reliant and therefor, the more they will be a danger post poop.

the show sucked, really didn't talk about anything important in detail, but at least it didn't make them look too nutty. not that some of them aren't. the one guy shot himself trying to teach his kids to shoot, and if it wasn't for the camera crew he would of been screwed. . . he had some other good ideas though, but shit. . .

Doomsday preppers had a guy shoot himself in the thumb and then passed out. We had a guy get his arm crushed to 1/8th of an inch in a closed mold and didn't pass out. I guess showmanship is his deal.

I guess I didnt miss much from the AC show.

my one brother is a tough guy, he's HUGE, he can life anything. . . was in martial arts, was a body builder, plays with snakes and large spiders and things i wouldn't even look at lol. but he sees blood and he goes down. the guy has a lot of tattoos, he's find until he looks at them bleeding.

i'm fine with blood, i'll pick up snakes if i have too (saved a few from my dogs) but you sneak up on me and yell boo, i'll scream like a little girl (and if you're close enough you'll get punched before i realize what's going on lol)

everyone has a trigger, i can't blame the guy for passing out for getting shot (ok, maybe his thumb) but damn, SHTF, this guy chopping wood and skins his knee? is he going to take half my medical supplies and 3 days of IV fluid ??? lol

agreed, i prep pretty hard, there are a lot of preps i have that i know i'll likely (hopefully) never need. but i'd rather have them for peace of mind and if i ever need them there is nothing else that will work. but if my car kit is noticed by a co worker (this really happened sorta) and he says "wow, you can really bug out and carry a lot of kit here, if you need to" then i knew he was at least prepper friendly. if he thought preppers were nut jobs and saw my kit, he might start talking about how i'm a crazy survivalist. luckily after a fantastic day at the range, he nicknamed me shapeshooter, and brags that i'm a better shot then i really am lol. (but damn it was a great day at the range.)

a family member (with a big mouth) told an estranged family member i had 2 years worth of food, and lived in the country. the son of that estranged family member was out here last year. we built a fence, we BBQ's and then shot a few rounds off. . . he lived with his father at the time, and told their neighbour's daughter that i lived "on a compound in the country". i found this out because "big mouth brother" later dated the neighbour (mother, not daughter) and daughter told her mother, in front of my brother (and Lord knows who else)
'that i lived on a compound in the country with dogs and guns"

having 2 years of food (not true) living in the county (true) with firearms (i target shoot) turned into "living on a compound (untrue) in the country with dogs (true) and firearms (true)

i live on a small farm, WTH?

HOW THEY VIEW US IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!

Consider this. The majority of people are followers. If they know that you prep and the reasons why you do it then they probably do not regard you as a nut job. If they also know of someone else who preps then that is another bonus. Then they see a TV show suggesting everyone have at least an emergency kit. Repetition and reinforcement are powerful educational tools. Even if they don't start to prepare they begin to change the way that they think about prepping. They have made their first step, which is always the biggest one.

I prep and my next door neighbor preps. Imagine if over the next little while five or six other neighbors start to prep because they see so much of it on the TV. Most people do watch TV and they believe nearly everything they are fed. If even they start to take rudimentary steps then you would have the making of your group right in your neighborhood! Together we are stronger and like it or not long term survival is dependent on being part of a group.

While the show did not give enough info, it made prepping seem "normal". Anderson laughing at that woman for only having a flash light & thinking she was prepared appeared to make people realize what prepared does not mean. With all his followers I would think more then a few people would have taken at least a small start. However like most things in people's lives they would stop a week or two later - like the gym memberships or the New Years resolutions.

The show got me off my bum and back to working on being prepared. It also got discussions started with several people which in turn spread to several more. Just that one show when I first saw it in february now has about a dozen people I know making a small effort.
Heck my mom is dying from cancer but she is still trying to prep. If thats not a positive impac from the show, I don't know what more it would take.

I did notice on the news that the store shelves where empty in New Orleans in spite of what people went through 7 years ago they still either didn't plan or they panicked

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people still believe that they will have advance notice of a disaster (true in the case of a hurricane, but not much else) so they only stock up on water and such when the warning comes! I saw one person on the show with 2 cases of 500ml water bottles and I think 5 gallon jugs...for 2 people this would likely be the "typical" 3 day supply. I also remember one of the guests spewing that 1 gallon per day per person crap again...simply not enough water!
Why do people who have already seen this type of thing still rely on stores not selling out of stuff in the face of a disaster?

Yup. 2 gallons washing and 1 drinking minimum. I drink and use in food about 1 gallon per person. Per day of course.

Denob, I would agree with everything you said. I just do not see the day when the mainstream media shows preppers in a positive light. As for the zombies knocking on the door... I am in Toronto so no matter what, there are going to be a lot of them lol.
