I don't find Dignam cheap at all. A quick search on MLS.ca brought me much more affordable, larger, parcels of land... that aren't limited to just the Cochrane ON area. :-S

To what end? They are search results. Put in your parameters and go from there. You can go to either mls.ca or realtor.ca (same system).
For instance, I typed in a search for Land > 10-50 acres > $0-$25,000 around North Bay Ontario and had 11 results returned (all south of Northbay even). 6 were residential or commercial, 4 were clearly rural.
There is absolutely no sense looking for less acreage than 20 acres. And even with 20 acres, you're risking running out of timber for building and heating, will have limited growing space and next to zero livestock space.
Generally it's accepted that for a house/cabin to rely mostly on wood heat for warmth and cooking, a plot of land for rotational planting, and some space for an efficient livestock (such as chickens or pigs) you need a minimum of 50 acres.
Most of the Dignam listings are prohibitively expensive ($42.5K for 13 acres, $22.5K for 1.4acres, $20K for 3.1acres and so on and so forth) but also ridiculously undersized for anyone with prepping and sustainable living concerns.
If you don't have the budget to buy a sufficient property for sustainable living... you are much better off putting the $$$ into very awesome tools, equipment and food and searching for a great plot of remote Crown Land that you can run off to in a SHTF emergency.
It's coming... and it's going to hurt!
