It seems as though some people already have their retreats/properties but don't have enough community involvement and, or cash flow to make it work, and there are others who can not afford or are unwilling to purchase property but want to be part of a community.
Would it be a viable solution to set up a posting specifically for this? Or is there one already that I have missed?

I'm sure you get the idea.

sounds like a good idea to me. I think community (or lack there of) is the step alot of us are missing to take our prepping to the next level.
Canuck_Prepper, it was actually your posting that prompted me. I like what you had to say and was interested in your set up, but I'm not Christian per se, so that sort of thing is good to know up front.
Hopefully people won't post their "resumes" here like they do for a job, if you know what I mean?
Soft skills are necessary in every setting and that's great, and I'm sure we all have a tendency to stretch the truth a bit, but in a survival situation don't try to lead someone to believe you can raise, slaughter, can, cure or cook a pig if you can't, because you'll end up killing everyone with starvation or botulism.
This is the real deal.

Another topic that I would find interesting and value in exploring the logistics side of staffing/stocking a retreat and the coordination of roles (ie. security). Maybe also some discussion on leadership, voting etc , common values that kind of thing.. Perhaps another thread if there is enough interest?
Ruffinit? Are you part of a retreat. By any chance was that first resume yours?
Canuck_Prepper
I agree that we need to develop communities now. I think it's as important as any other aspect of prepping.
-No, I'm not part of a group/retreat.
-Yes, that is my "resume".
-I am vegan, but I am willing to learn the skills of the ancients.

I like the idea, but leary of the so called freaks out there, being a very privet family it would take a lot to have to deal with other and there ways. Being of the organic pagan types.
I am still trying to navigate this site. My daughter calls me a luddite. I can bake a mean apple pie lickety split but it might take me four hours to figure out how to perform a simple task on a computer. Kids.
Beth I couldn't agree with you more about the security and compatability factor. I just feel that it makes sense to choose your allies prior to, as opposed to having that choice made for you when in dire straights.
I read one of your posts and you mentioned that land is fairly affordable in your area. I am more than willing to relocate. My understanding is that it is difficult if not impossible to get a mortgage if there isn't a building on a property. Perhaps you have more info about that...
I think you mentioned you are interested in soapmaking. Here's a great link. If you use a blender stick/magic wand it takes about two minutes to make a batch of soap. I made the newbie castile, added some kelp and eucalyptus oil. I started to use it in two weeks- didn't wait for the recommended two month cure. It is lovely.

I love where this is going. We are going to make it together or not at all. Community baby! Get to know your neighbours.

I've been reading your posts. Good to know there are people around with a sense of humour and firm convictions. I have learned so much in the short time I've been here. Even with some of the bickering, especially with the bickering, it gives insight to the human condition. I like the fact that you challenge people, that being said, I'll never be up for it ^J^ Keep up the good work. And thanks for your input to my post.

I am good at dire straights, bring it on. As far as choice made for me, they better have a gun to my head, because if the shift happens I'd be the boss, ok me and hubby.
not sure about montage on vacant land, you might want to Kijiji lanark highlands or North Frontenac ont, there is some property that have small cabins on them. You find something and all tell you if the area sucks or not, there are many small river streams that head into the Ottawa river, . Any thing north you could have a mega uranium pit or some such thing in your back yard.
Thanks Beth. Good to know. I hope we'll always be on the same side. I am usually passive person myself but I hear you.

Im new here too but from London also, If your or anyone else is looking for a deal on land with no mortgage try looking at DIGNAM LAND in Barrie ontario, they have a site i believe it is www.dignam.com Anyhow I have looked at them for years dreaming of buying a chunk of land. But they seem very flexible with getting land, since from my experience you cant get a mortgage on vacant land. I may be wrong but i have looked around alot and read up on this.

Hey all.
I"ve read several postings and find them informative. This particulat thread is great. From reading, we are almost all concerned with similar possibilities. I portray myself as being "green" (enviromentally). So as to not look like too much of a nut. I live in the GTA and would be interested in meeting other like minded people within my community. A coffee, pint, whatever. If TSHTF I will not be making the great exsodous out of the city. Instead hunker down wait out the storm then help where I can.
Any takers. ppm me.

i would stay away from dignam, there is more to buying property then one might think, especialy in the northern part of ontario. most of that land is old minning clames or land that has been clear cut in the last few years. most of it only comes with surface rights, meaning you only own the surface and 3 feet down a company can come in and open a mine or log the land at anytime and there would be nothing you could do about it. most of the north is crown land, the only owned land is the stuff that was awarded to men returning from the boar war in th 1900s given to them by the king of england or something like that. some of it has been split up and is sold from time to time thats the land you want. you should also look into a land lease, you can lease crown land from the gov. for cheap especialy if you tell them you are starting an off the grid colony. I own land 6hrs north of the city on a lake i also have land 2 hours north of that. My bug out destinations. i do have a comunity or a group of people comming with me. but at the same time owning land is not really needed. you just need to know where to go and how to make due when you get there and doing it as a group is even better. I own these propertys for hunting as i am an avid hunter. I dont know if i would buy a property to use as a bug out location. we are lucky in ontario in that we have an aboundance of crown land that can be used by all of us, but if you are set on buying land ask questions and read all the paperwork research as much as you can! look at recreationalland.net they are a good site and they disclose what rights come with the property up front.
sorry about my spelling hope this helped.
