If you are looking for masks take a good look at the Israeli civilian or military one that are available at some army surplus stores single canister with drinking straw port. There not really expensive, canisters are readily have available have wide field of vision and more importantly they work.just my opinion

Hey every one looking to see what is the top ten full face masks and types of filters.

Before making any sort of suggestion I will ask you to define your expected use. Different "tools" for different jobs.

Expected use would be volcanic ash, virus outbreaks, germ warfare, tear gas, and have I missed anything else ? now I'm just assuming there is a filter for each different use....right

Ok... to give a rundown...
1: Volcanic ash by itself would bef ine with an N95 mask or even a simple surgical mask. You want to separate out the ash itself which in the scheme of things are quite large particles. If you are looking at poisonous gasses as well from an eruption forget it. In most cases they displace the normal air/oxygen so you have nothing to breathe.
2: Virus outbreaks would be fine with an N100 mask and a face shield. You could also add nitrile gloves. Strict handwashing and no face to face contact and you should be good.
3: Germ warfare see no. 2. It would also depend on the transmission method. If the germ is absorbed via cuts or through the skin no amount of filter will help you.
4: Tear gas in isolation can be handled by many commercial filters and face masks. In many instances though for crowd control it is mixed with other irritants that affect the skin and interact with moisture to cause very unpleasant effects. These effects are not designed to be life threatening but for anyone who is allergic or has respiratory problems and already compromised they could be in deep trouble.
I hope that helps a little bit.

For tear gas and other common riot control agents. http://solutions.3mcanada.ca/wps/portal/3M/en_CA/PPE_SafetySolutions_NA/Safety/Products/PoW-Product-Catalog/?PC_7_U00M8B1A0O0N00I56S0AQQIPV1000000_nid=GS291JGPF0gsF3RH7CD92Ngl1F12W5S839bl
For broad coverage...military spec for chemical and biological contaminants...... http://solutions.3mcanada.ca/wps/portal/3M/en_CA/PPE_SafetySolutions_NA/Safety/Products/PoW-Product-Catalog/?PC_7_U00M8B1A0O0N00I56S0AQQIPV1000000_nid=GS6SSSCXJ0gsF3RH7CD92NglQR5KCNG4ZDbl
And for strictly biological like viral outbreak N95 - N100 mask. As I said...different tools for different jobs. One thing you have to consider is length of time your filter will be effective. This is based on the filter and level of contaminent in the air. Filters can fail after as little as 15 minutes or last for hours. If you are seriously considering this type of protection it would be wise to visit a local supplier and talk face to face. Avoid buying anything like this online or military surplus. Much of surplus stock is degraded structurally. It may work or it may not. Secondly you have to be "fit tested". This means actually trying it on to ensure it seals around your particular face profile. If you are going to the expence and believing this will protect you ... the "moment of truth" is not the time to learn otherwise. Lastly you also have to learn how to change filters/masks safely in a contaminated environment. It isn't something you can just buy and forget.

This is where I've been looking for NBC masks, suits, etc.

http://approvedgasmasks.com/

However, like an earlier post someone mentioned if you need a mask, or respiratory system there are safety shops that can sell them. Acklands Granger can get a wide range of masks, half masks, breathing apparatus, etc. that is sufficient for paint booths, mould / asbestos abatement, etc.

Good luck!

I've always wanted some 3M 6000 series full face masks but couldn't part with the $234.75 each as listed on the 3M website. I found a great place called the Safety Company out of the USA that sells the exact same mask for a mere $38.39. Also, I've come to understand that the N95 masks I've been storing are not best suited to stopping viruses. After a long and extensive search, it appears that the Triosyn T-3000 or T-5000 series of disposable respirators are the best. They are rated to stop 99.99% of airborne and droplet viruses. And, best of all, the same place sells them for about $5.00. Shipping seemed pretty reasonable to me at about $25.00 for what I ordered. If you're interested in looking at their very extensive website, go here (I've bookmarked the 3M mask for your convenience).

The only benefit a CBRN respirator would provide over a NIOSH approved on is with chemical agents. All other events i.e.. ash, bio and radiological can be protected against with off the shelf respirators.

I say this with a military CBRN background. I have NIOSH respirators at home for myself and the family. I do have a C4 mask for myself but that's a different story.
