Is there a web site that clearly explains how solar power bits work? How to build your own and why you need the bits for it to work? I have read so much on the subject my head is spinning.
Or is the whole thing a matter of me buying the bits so I can see how it all works?

its easy, as long as you don't want to know how the components work. the easiest set up would be a single solar panel, with a chrge controller set up to a 12v battery. charge the battery during the day, then attach an inveter at night and you'll get 110v output....won't last that long though....2012 the guy to talk to about batteries. i think he gets deep cycle marine batteries (i don't know where he gets them from, probably when the Navy is in town).

A lot of planning has to go into it before you plan a system.

still planning mine...want to go hybrid but the local municipality won't allow it. im trying to come up with some 'mobile' wind turbine design. i could throw one up and chance it, but my neighbours will call on me. especially since i just had them arrested for trespass.

There are vertical wind generators that look like rooftop ventilation whirlybirds and generators that look like rooftop air conditioning units. I have a friend in Lethbridge who is looking into them because even though it's really windy there, city council won't allow even small wind generators. The best part is that you can put up a decorative windmill in your yard but you get fined if it produces power.
