My first observed effect of tariffs, steel price increases. Had to order some steel to build a big driveway gate for a neighbour. What should have been about 175 dollars cost almost 300!
Everyone is putting up big gates. The demand is so high, I think I could go into business building them.Postby Clarence » Mon Jul 23, 2018 1:29 am
As this board and topic are supposed to deal with preparedness and not whether one wishes to freeze up north versus enjoy the warmth and sun of the south.Clarence, Clarence, Clarence.....Are we a little cranky? by we I mean you. Look up..way up, to your own post of July 7th. I will just hit the high notes for those in the cheap seats. You covered social media, Welfare, Morals, Credit cards, Organized crime, Racial division, SJW, and Terrorism in a tariff thread. Im not complaining about what you covered just asking for the same liberties, you use.Is there maybe something you would like to confess to that may better explain your frustration? Confession is good for the soul
Peppercorn, unlike your anti American posts, my posts are related to profiling or other measures or methods to help a person wishing to survive, to do just that. Tips on what to look for, how to profile folks or situations are things taught professionals. Real simple peppercorn, real simple. Some people don’t like the word profiling or the use of stats. It is very true that not everyone fits a profile. They are however used by professionals as an aid to avoid situations or an aid in catching the perp. Always, always need to keep a very open mind, take your sources warts and all etc, but reality trumps make believe or other political agendas. A person will not live long if they refuse to observe or face reality, the minute you do, you may be dead.
And yes, I love escaping canada during the winter and even summer for nice warm places and soothing breezes and light blue waters.
Btw, increases you mention are scalping and playing on anti American Ferver. Tariff was 25%
Sounds like Europe is doing the right thing and lowering some tariffs.
I think your MAGA cap is on a little tight (see I am learning to profile). Trump (praise be upon him) and europe just agreed to talk about lowering tariffs, and not impose more while talking about the situation.in other words Merica is getting its ass kicked by the tariffs its already placed and is looking for a way to back down after shooting its self in the foot, driving sales of its agricultural products (like soy beans) down and having to promise its farmers billions in subsities.
Have no long term worries about tariffs from America, it cant slug it out with the world and come out on top, those days left along time ago. It may try ofcourse but its increasingly clear the Emperor has no clothes. Who can take that nation serious anymore? I give you, and this is just for you Clarence, The best example of how far everything (finance, education, mental health, etc) has fallen in that nation. You might have missed it as I don't think it would be on Fox news, or Breitbart News (see I am profiling as you suggest)Here is a elected represenative, from Georgia I think, Just your typical elected member in the USA. Enjoy....And yes this is real... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k4pMTsa1Kw

Just checking in.. you boys having fun with this back and forth?? Do I need to say easy?? All good.. both big boys? You both ride the line at times with each other on butting heads.. but are both really good with other folks etc and add positive things to the board.. 🙂
So you all good?? FG

So locally there is concern in regards to the farmers around me that did soybeans. I had to go do some reading after it came up on CBC and a number of other news sites in regards to how the USA crop prices are both tied (but not) but are to Canadian. A lot of good reading came out of chasing that down the rabbit whole.
Because I do as much as possible in my local food shed, and from my local farmers plus growing as much of my own as I can, I don't feel the impact in the same way.. I see the rising costs.. but not "the where or why" example. Today a 20 kilo bag of pre-done rabbit food costs 17.99.. Five years ago, that same bag cost 12.99 and had a program that you bought nine got the tenth for free, plus I got 10 percent discount for picking up.
I needed to go buy lumber and its up again but its been steadily rising in costs monthly to weekly for the past two years.. the flex and cost on it, makes me give the stink eye. Raw Cedar post are currently running a dollar a foot, plus delivery costs.
I think the biggest way I see it is at the stores.. they are lacking certain things, and good luck finding food sales in the sale island these days.. unless you want to buy bottled water.. it only 5x the amount it used to be and so when they drop it on sale.. just a mear 3x.. shakes head.
I am watching what is happening.. I do have some concerns but I will wait and see.

Glad that goat yoga is working for you. The way you were able to jump up on that counter wearing a dress was impressive!

I believe there is a so much manipulation of pricing Going on that there is a snowballs chance in hell of trying to validate what we pay at the counter. Dumping of products, taxes, tariffs, currency values, speculation of stock market... good luck making sense of things.
The only thing I see is, the more money you have the better off you are. Of course money doesn’t have to mean cash. It can be being self sufficient with food, heat, power....
Health, family and a full larder are key. How we obtain it, is the only question.
Ideally, Its best to have both, as both have a value during an emergency. Quickly Buy a car to get out of town quick, a cottage or farm in the country, chickens....Pay off a mortgage with devalued currency or by selling eggs for the cost of a mortgage balance.
Just about everyone is guessing as to what shoe may fall off. Will tariffs be what causes an economic collapse, will a fake war be the economic trigger, US mid terms this fall could be trigger etc etc etc. Beauty of prepping, is when done right and with luck on your side, you will be better positioned for many hazards.

Oh ya, Peppercorn is a source for info on solar panels, gardening etc and that’s what I am here for. We have a saying in my field. You take your sources, warts and all.

I agree Clarence, no one can predict what the future holds. All we can do is move forward the best we can and attempt to position ourselves favorably in-light of the changing times. Worry doesn't accomplish anything. Enjoy life as best we're able and pray that our children and grand children will be prepared for whatever tomorrow brings...
None you improvise, one (or more) is luxury.

Well this year is my first year gardening in over twenty five years. Right now I only have 3/4 of my stuff doing well so here for all the tips I can gather.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-tariffs-canned-goods-1.4768172
In a nut shell for those that do not want to go read the article, they are talking about the fact that there will be a one to three cent cost increase per can that is used. The big pop companies say they are going to raise price by one cent. Not such a big thing to me personally.. we are not pop drinkers per say.
However related to more folks and to preppers, the price of all canned food is expected to increase.. Was interesting that they did talk about where or not the stores would pass that one was still up in the air.. However the one bigger retailer is quoted as saying food prices will be going up.
I find this kind of funny honestly because canned goods have been going up steadily for the past months and years.. so its just keeping to the same trend.
