A lot of people seem to be of the opinion that in the event of a TEOTWAWKI situation, everyone will suddenly come together in some sort of friendly utopian paradise, offering their supplies, fairly bartering and quickly beginning to rebuild into a just society without the mistakes of the past. While there certainly will always be some who go out of their way to assist others, there will also always be those who will not hesitate to kill you for what you have. It should be considered as well the lengths to which a normally peaceful, ethical person will go to ensure the survival of those they love. If a parent has no food for their starving child and someone else has food you better believe they will kill them to save their child. If on the other hand they already have the food and you come knocking trying to get some food for your starving family you better believe they will turn you away.
Looting and rioting? I could cut and paste all day long but it's just as easy for the reader to do some research on their own. Just a couple of examples from countless possibilities;
"Effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans"-1/3 of the police left before the storm hit, looting out of control, snipers, etc, etc...
"1992 Los Angeles riots"-Widespread looting, assault, arson and murder, property damages roughly $1 billion, 53 people died during the riots and thousands more injured, etc, etc...
I'm not saying the average person isn't inherently 'good' or trying to fearmonger but change the situation and you change the population. With nothing to fear, no legal system, no police? Just because you loaned Bill the neighbour your rake before the fall (of society) doesn't mean he won't beat you to death with it now. At the very least consider that you may have to hunt to survive in some future where all normal means are non operational and prepare for that. You could do a lot more but you could do a lot less too (and die when Bill remembers you had a food stash). If you assume the worst (and prepare for it) and it doesn't happen you were ready but didn't need it (cool, I'd rather have the fire extinguishers than the fire anyway). If you assume the best (and don't prepare for the worst) you'll be caught with your pants down.

I completely agree, one thing you left out was at one point the government will declair martial law.... im just wondering if that means they will take all the guns???? Any answers to what would happen in the event the government dose declair martial law here in ontario???

I think things might be a little different here in Canada.

how? theres 300,000,000 million firearms in Canada (not including ones that are unregistered!), about 10 for every Canadian. I live rural Hamilton and ALL my neighbours have unregistered firearms...(farmers, guns been in the family for years)....it would be impractical to say the least...

In a small SHTF situation things might be alright, in a long drawn out not so all right.
In European countries right now, due to the snow and the cold, people are having fist fights in the store over loaves of bread.
In black friday sales, in the US and in Canada, deals on toasters and flat screen TV's saw people stampede, fight, brawl, use pepper spray, and shoot at each other. Wow all this over some 20-50% off sales.
You can bet on this, some people will be very nice, some will be ok, most will be neutral for a time, and some will be evil from the start. If a long drawn out event, or total breakdown, well things will get more ugly than ever seen in North America, they will be ugly like in some European Countries and African Countries ugly. You do not want to see or be part of that.
From what I was told (TOLD) in the U.S. and canada they would try. I guess it wouldnt really be a viable solution... I was not aware of the ammount of fire arms in Canada. All of my guns are registerd, I carry them alot up north and go shooting and hunting all the time and I dont need any trouble for it. Im heading ice fishing this weekend and im bringing my remington 870 with me because there have been a few wolf attacks on the lake in the last few weeks. I used to live in rural hamilton years ago. Im not far form you now..
Thanks again Carbon04!

Thanks 2012Compatible. For a while there I thought I was the only one who registered all my guns. Well... almost all.
Katrina must have seemed more of an end of the world to the unfortunate folks who were there than a SHTF. You have to think the ones who stayed were the true sheeple.
Folks like us (preppers) would have said "Hmmm Ground zero in a Cat 5 hurricane and I'm living 20 ft UNDER sea level ... bug out time.."
So I would guess that only the ones who were most likely to loose it were the only ones who stayed.
The slow burn that we'll face will have a better cross section of the population and it won't be an overnight disaster. Sure, there will be the small segment of society that will be nefarious and we'll have to have our guard up but I don't think Katrina is the best example to cite.
In the Depression people were poor and had to scrape by however they could but government still worked, taxes were collected, police were on the job and did their best (I'm sure anyone who had a job did their damn best to keep it).
Thanks, I take pride in the steps I have taken to ensure the fire arms I have are leagle and kept as safe as they can be. But unlike you i think it will be, most people even some of us preppers will be cought off guard ia if we ge a warning from the government it will be very little. I hope that if it happens we all remember our fellow man and try to help others instead of keeping it all for our selves.

Well Timberwolf, you pegged me right on the nose. I like to think of myself as a kind, self sacrificing and happy guy, with strong morals and a good heart. But I'll tell you what, you better believe that if a time comes when I'm holding my daughter in my arms because she hasn't got the strength to stand up on her own due to lack of nutrition or water, I will most likely do anything to see to it that she gets what she needs. To see her there looking up at me like that would be absolutely devistating.
Oh, I'm prepping just like the rest of us here on this site. Doing what I can with what I have to work with. Trying to ensure my preps are as adaptable as possible to any given scenario. But hey, supplies run out, learnt skills could become pointless, and a nest egg could fall and crack. My plan may not work out as I hope and I may have to resort to other, less diplomatic, means for survival.
But thank you, Timberwolf, for this post. For all of us that finds ourselves defending our homes and the loved ones inside them, know that the actions of the enemy will most likely stem from neccessity. Pity them, as you protect your family.
don't get me wrong...I have over 20 firearms, long and short and their all registered legally, in a 500lb gun safe. im also a gunsmith (tradeable skill in a shtf scenario right?) so occasionally ill fix handguns for people at work without a att...thats about my only infraction.
