The idea of freeze dried food is repulsive to me. That being said, survival is the game so MREs are bound to make their way into my food supply. Has anyone tried out vegan MREs? Do they even exist? Are they worth the money?
I will eat meat to survive (I make mean bbq ribs) but would like to avoid it unless absolutely necessary.

Freeze dried such as Mountain House are different than MRE from what I understand. I like freeze dried strawberries. I hear the veggies are good too.

Last fall I picked up some Vegetarian meals, Vegan meals need to be self made I think. The meals I ate were tasty but lots of sodium, there are some veggy MRE's some taste good as well as some I can not have due to allergy issues. I love the dehydrated fruits in the LRPs - Long Range Patrol Rations, now these are quite tasty, need water to rehydrate and are more expensive.
Binden, Mountain House and others all have dehydrated foods as well. The advantages of the MREs - LRPs are that each package is really 2 meals in one. I have never been able to or even wanted to eat the entire package in one sitting. At the vary least these meals are a 1 1/2 option so keep that in mind as well when comparing prices. The other Civie ones are definitely, ONE meal only options, no extras in the package as well, so eg, no coffee, no biscuits/crackers/bars etc.

This past weekend I saw an ad for a product available in Home Hardware, it is an easy peazy vac packs for leftovers, I will be looking at them later today or tomorrow for sure. They offer a vac pump and bags, no electricy required and seem very light as well.

Why not make a list of what you eat now, go to bulk foods or other places, and make your own MREs? That is what I will be doing from now on, beef jerky or Fish jerky can be kept for at least 6 months so long as it is dry, look for veggy options for protien as well, though stay away from too much Soy as there are some disturbing problems when we eat too much of this stuff. I am looking at buying Hemp seeds in bulk as a protein and fibre choice, learning about other stuff as well.

Good Luck ~WR

Hey again
I was at Mountain Equipment co-op yesterday and picked up some freeze dried corn- strawberries- mixed carrots and peas also some blueberries
I think MRE's will be a last resort for many of us, I ate a lot in the army and they are not the best tasteing and the military MRE really lack fruit or veges
I also found apple brown Betty ( apples and cinamon and oat meal my weakness )
Hopefuully I will be able to dry my own to last as I love my fruit and some veges
All the best Hobo
