Taking up Farmgal's request to report back, and reading Wayne's post on Geiger Counters with interest, thought I'd share some of what I found using mine.
I was around most of the North Shore last week from Sudbury all along Hwy 17 to Blind River and Elliot Lake. I used a GMC-300E Geiger-Muller Counter in a variety of spots. This is by no means a high end machine..but for the every day use for a layperson like me perfectly fine. 🙂
All readings from Sudbury to Blind River along the highway were pretty much normal...a low of 6CPM and went no higher than 21CPM along the way. Even walking the perimeter and in the parking lot at the Cameco Uranium Refinery in Blind River, ON showed no spike or change in the readings.
Photo II: Unexpected surprise. Passed a truck carrying the containers used to transfer processed uranium from Cameco. Drove behind it for a couple minutes and next to it for a bit on a double lane portion...no spike..nothing. No change in CPM levels aside from the normal ups and downs.

Elliot Lake was a bit of a different story. My dad is a geologist, so he could eye up particular rock outcrops that might give a good reading.
Some of the exposed rocks along the highway to Elliot Lake from Hwy 17 showed nominal spikes..bouncing around 30-40CPM but nothing of consequence. There is an old abandonded open pit Uranium Mine south of Elliot Lake off the highway but could not get close due to the snowed in conditions.
What was interesting, was the rock face at the new Elliot Lake Mall.
Photo III: Location of the rock face. This is a typical feature in the city, and where I took a reading.

Photo IV: Reading of 87 CPM on that rock face. Granted it dropped to about half that once you were 20' away standing in a parking spot. I see why this city popped up as Canada's Uranium Capital...this isn't even where the mines were built back in the day. 🙂

Thanks for the interesting post.
None you improvise, one (or more) is luxury.
