Mylar bags have very smooth walls. The ends of the bag won't stay open to allow the sealer to suck out the air inside. The straw lets the vacuum suck out the air. Bags made specifically for vacuum sealing have one side that's a little rough. It's not much, but it's enough of a gap to let the sealer suck air.

my straw method works but 😮 💡 you gave me the idea of using a strip of vacuum sealer bag inside the mylar bag along the top.
AND IT WORKS................... just cycle the vacuum sealer 3 times in the same spot then move the bag down half inch cycle machine once.
then iron the top as normal.

happy prepping 😀

If you are going to buy one look for a model with a port for a jar attachment like this: http://www.foodsaver.com/product.aspx?pid=9066

It's the greatest thing for sealing dry beans etc. in canning jars.

(sorry the picture is so large I've tried multiple times to make it smaller!)

I really like my Food Saver but I have had failures in some of the bags because the items were "sharp" - dried veggies are a good example. DO NOT use a vacuum sealer as a substitute for LT food storage or you may unpack it only to find the seal is long gone and your food not as fresh as you thought it would be - . There is no good substitute for mylar and O2 absorbers. I still use the vacuum sealer for shorter term items and to pack jars.

I am in the market for one also, and today I saw Wal-Mart had the stand up black food saver for $139 from $159 and they also had the Seal-A-Meal one for $59 from $79, I just about bought the later one. I have spent over a week asking about everyone I know if anyone has a used one for sale but no luck so I guess my cheap but is gonna just buy new... Anyone used the Rival Seal-A-Meal before and have an opinion?

i ve had a rival seal-a-mael for a few months now, got it on sale at one of the zellers store closing dealy's. 59.99$. we've sealed alot of ground beer already, whole chicken's with herbs ready to go for soup's. havnt sealed anything else yet, ran out of bag's waiting for the rolls to come on sale at costco. im super excited to seal up some rice and beans when the bags come on sale.
