I agree with you for everyday consumption, Henry, but of course what preppers are paying for with bottled water isn't the water, but rather the container and packaging. There's no debating that a 500ml plastic bottle is a great container for water: portable, lightweight, etc. And a shrink-wrapped case of 24 is easy to move and stack. So I think it makes sense to keep some on hand. Consider its value as a trade item.

I can't get over the cost of canned water. I think I've got water purification covered, but I thought I'd get a few flats of canned water, just to cover the circumstances I'm not anticipating. But it costs more than beer or pop! What's up with that?

Possibly the cost of the can? Metal isn't cheap.

I have to think that beer or pop takes more money to make than water though? Plus, there would be none of the liquor tax like on, say, beer. Perhaps its a "demand" thing.

I still can not get over how can you pay for water in Canada. But if you really need bottled water why do not you get plastic bottles (free) and fill them up, add some preservative , if you want to store it (why?), and it is free.
There is bottling company just about 10km from me and that is all they do ,filling bottles from tap. What a business.
I have fresh Muskoka air in plastic bags for sale ,very cheap. Just in case. ha ha

What I do is whenever I am pressure canning and I do not have a full load, I pressure can a jar of my well water.. it costs me nothing for the water, the load was being done already and I have shelf stable sealed water for just in case.

I can't see myself every just canning a load of water to honest but I have a far bit over the years by doing the above, If I ever needed the jar, I could just open, then shake some air into the water to get rid of the flat taste and other then the cost of the lid.. its good to go..

Well, the water I'm referring to is the canned stuff that has a shelf life of 30 years. My understanding is that you can't just put water in a plastic bottle and set it on the shelf, it goes bad - either contaminated with bottle-material chemicals (plastic), or wee biologicals. IIRC, the shelf life of plastic bottled water is 2 years...

It's the novelty. I had to pay more until recently for veggies without salt. Water boat rations are fairly expensive as well compared to beer etc. A cool way to save money is to ask family/ friends for pop/ arizona ice tea/ kefir bottles the are made for acid drinks or have HDPE 2 on the bottom. Their food grade plastic. Those cheap 500ml bottles leach plastic when heated/ get old/ frozen. Remember to rinse out used bottles and leave overnight with javex to ensure you won't get water born bacteria like on the Indian reserve in the national park near here. Put a drop of non sented javex if you want o make sure everything's ok
