We believe the best weapon is mental preparation. If you know things ,for example: the fact that a humans wind pipe can be crushed with 70ft lbs of energy. (It takes much less to simply incapacitate the person). If you can seize the opportunity it doesnt matter how you apply the force as long as u do...ie broomstick, fire poker, fingertips, fist, etc.
Do not attempt to practice this on a human being or animals because it is very easy to create significant damage. And it is simply an example.

Another note is areas like the throat are so vulnerable that people have natural defence reactions and tend to protect them automatically.

Our opinion is that even the lowest end fighting school will prepare you better then nothing.

I have to disagree with you there. I've got a black belt, I've fought in the ring, taught self-defence for several years and conservatively speaking I have somewhere north of 450 street/bar fights in my misspent past. So I know a little about fighting. "Low end" will teach you moves and technigues that might look fancy but can get you into big trouble. "Low end" will give you a false sense of confidence. Better nothing than "low end". To be honest, you would probably be better off renting a couple of kung-fu movies and practicing those moves.
When it comes to defending yourself and/or your family, do you want to defend with "low end" or with quality.

I'm not trying to bash your comment, I'm only trying to give some seasoned advise.

Think very carefully before carrying any weapon. Unless you are trained, the chances are that you will have that weapon used on YOU. Not everyone if affected by pepper spray, I have seen guys shrug off multiple baton strikes and come charging ahead. Now, not only do you have some who wants to rob you but, they are very, very pissed.

You are absolutely correct remington870. It is a very risky business to carry and weapon even for self defense. I would go one step further and suggest that currently in everyday situations there is absolutely no need to carry any type of weapon. In any confrontational situation there are only two ways it can go: in your favor or in the favor of the other party. 50/50 odds are not good at the best of times, so don't play the odds. Knowing how to protect yourself and knowing when to exercise that knowledge are two entirely different things. So unless your life is under imminent serious threat then is far more prudent to exercise caution.

Just my opinion

I think one of the VERY BEST things to lose will be ego. No one will be standing around saying or thinking what a manly man you are... We have a fight or flight response for a reason and MOST of the time flight is the best decision. Unless your life or the life of someone you care about is in danger it is far more prudent to evade and escape. There are very VERY few scenarios that will require you to fight... That said, once you decide that there is no other option, then fight to win. NOTHING is too "dirty" once you have made that decision.

2 to the chest, 1 to the head. If you're not ready to do that then put ur gun away.

The best way to win a conflict, is to avoid it by all possible means. If it is not at all possible then attack. As the they say "The best defense is a good offence". Go in first, go in hard and do it right the first time or be prepared to always look over your shoulder for retaliation.

P.S. A double tap, and a head shot is SOP. Two to the chest to put it down, and a head shot to keep it down.

Since this particular thread is about guns, I thought that it would be appropriate to mention that last night 3 people were shot to death at the University of Alberta. This is bad enough in itself. For me it hits close to home. One of the dead was a friend and co-worker. His wife and mine are also friends and co-workers. My friend worked part time security at the UofA. He is survived by a wife and two young sons. He will be missed.
