Hello,

I thought I would start a new topic to find out why people here in Ontario are prepping for.

As for me, I think the biggest threat would be an EMP or a CME that would knock out the power for several months.

If the States, did an EMP "False Flag" attack on their own soil, it would knock out the power grid here in Canada too.

The sun launching a CME is a factual event that has happened in the past in the late 1800s.
Back then, it send a static charge that over charged the power lines.
It was not a dramatic even since we were not as dependent on electronics as we are today.

Well, that's my opinion, your turn...

Really bad weather.

We've been through three ice storms in the last two years knocking power out for days in the middle of winter. There are also Tornado warnings for the region I live in. There is a Chemical Plant nearby so we have a contingency plan for this also.

Always planning for tough economic times. I think this should be standard for everyone as its one of the most likely scenarios. I've been told 3 months living expenses as a minimum for the standard of living your used to. In tough times if you tighten your belt that 3 months could last way longer. Also long term planning like retirement, getting rid of all debt, etc. As many have said here its not the sexiest topic for preppers...but sound economic standing is a great foundation.

I'm fairly close to a rail line so short term bug out due to derailment is possible. It's another reason to have a plan ready if we have to leave home for awhile.

Hi, I remember hearing that a meteor exploding in the atmosphere could equal an atomic bomb detonation, causing a similar EMP effect.
Like the one over Russia injured thousands of people just with it's sonic boom and sent broken glass everywhere. If you live close to a nuclear reactor and power fails for a good duration, this is also a risk. Diesel fuel is needed to pump cooling for the core and when fuel runs out, meltdown is to follow. Lately we've seen sinkholes everywhere popping up all over the globe, Ontario can also have sinkholes on your list of prep's. In bad weather power lines falling down while still live, sparking and bouncing is a common scene. How to insulate yourselves if you encounter one, would be another one.

In Ontario?
1. Liberals collapsing the economy - few have jobs.
2. Extreme winter weather - ice storm taking down the grid.

Everything else a distant 3rd

1. Weather emergencies
2. Economic hardship
3. We're on city water so... prepping for water contamination/restrictions.

I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband

Affordable, independent/interdependent , more relevant community living
Reducing further debt by more remote location.
Live/organize-where-you-work options....with any number of associates.
More control over the wellbeing of your immediate natural environment.
Being able to have more pre-choice of your immediate neighbors and their declared mindset.
Subsequent greater potential of creative, local opportunities.
We have been largely divided, and hence tend to be socially and personally too divisive in mindset.
We have the choice, still ,to grow integrative patterns among ourselves....proactively instead of defensively.
See and experience co-llaboration as the sharing of leadership qualities rather than alpha assignment or polit i king.
Foster an immediate supportive environment of : Un-learn, re-member , re-new , re-learn, embodied re-learnt.
o ya, much better, own-grown food, clean water control, more natural material dwellings. See the difference in childrens' experience. Be assured it reaches to the 7th generation. That's an investment.

Yes, a valuable lesson for me. I lived on the south shore of Montreal at the time of the ice storm. Had gone into work that morning and and by the time 4:00 pm came the store shelves were emptied of candles, camping heaters and stoves, food was even worst. Just like a black Friday door busting event, people dashed to get everything off the shelves. Power was on at work because I worked in a Hospital as an electro - mechanic, machinist, welder etc.,and I had the job to maintain the diesel generator running. It was business as usual at work lighting and electrically, but little did I know that outside the reality of the situation with the storm and power outages. At first Hydro was intermittent and eventually total blackout in the evening and after that it didn't come back on until several days later. The power out meant not heat, city water for drinking, showering cooking and no lights.

The little food I had in the refrigerator and freezer were going to go to waist if it wasn't for the cold winter outside balcony. It opened my eyes to being prepared and not count on external provisions in time of crisis.

While I am aware of the outside factor threats, (EMP, and so forth) I prep first and formost for Economic Hardship, combined with the fact that I want as off-grid as possible from the global non-local food system, and of course Weather issues, I live in a area that was out for three weeks during the ice storm..

Looks like we're up to a G4 storm...
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g4-alert-another-storm-reaches-severe-levels
Here is what we MIGHT expect...

Power systems: Possible widespread voltage control problems and some protective systems will mistakenly trip out key assets from the grid.

Spacecraft operations: May experience surface charging and tracking problems, corrections may be needed for orientation problems.

Other systems: Induced pipeline currents affect preventive measures, HF radio propagation sporadic, satellite navigation degraded for hours, low-frequency radio navigation disrupted, and aurora has been seen as low as Alabama and northern California (typically 45° geomagnetic lat.).
