A large portion of this has already been covered, but I'll list out whats in my cars. (2 cars, matching kit in each.)

Large Rubbermaid container with the following items:

Containers:

  • Small backpack - in the event I need to pack up and walk.
Folding bag with shoulder strap as an extra container if I need to to take gear from the vehicle beyond what will fit in the small pack.
  • Clothing:

  • Set of clothes for each family member (wool socks, long pants, T-shirt, sweater)
Hiking boots (myself only, as family would likely stay with the vehicle if I need to hoof it for gas/help).
Hat, winter gloves, scarf for each family member.
    Bandanas (Sun protection)
1 pair of mechanics gloves (thin but strong so you don't loose all dexterity when working with them on)
  • Water / Drinks

  • 2.5 Liters of water. (5x500ml bottles).
Water purification tablets and cloth to use as filter.
    Lemonade Mix (individual packets).
    Coffee (instant individual packets).
    Sweetener (individual packets).
  • Food:

  • Granola Bars (ones without items that easily melt, although they still get sticky if it's hot enough)
2 Serving packet of Mountain House Freeze Dried Meal.
    Bag of trail mix.
  • Medical:

  • Small medical kit (very basic).
    CPR mask.
Medications such as Tylenol, Advil, Benadryl, Gravol, Imodium, Tums.
  • Hygiene:

  • Soap.
    Antibacterial Hand Sanitizer.
    Wet Wipes.
    Bathroom Wipes.
    Toilette paper.
    Kleenex.
    Razor and shaving lotion.
    Toothbrush (for each family member)
    Dental Floss
    Deodorant
  • Miscellaneous:

  • Very small amount of change and cash. Enough for a phone call and to buy a couple drinks etc.
    Small pot.
Canister of gel fuel with small unit to place pot on (it sucks but it will eventually boil water).
    Flashlight and extra batteries.
    Lighters and storm proof matches.
    Emergency Ponchos.
    Emergency Blanket.
    Folding pocket knife.
Extra large zip ties (10 or so).
    Jumper Cables.
    Tire Iron / Jack.
    Blanket.
    Sleeping Bag (only in winter).
    Shovel (only in winter).
Kitty litter for traction on ice (only in winter).
    Shaker Tube (siphoning gas etc)
  • It probably sounds like a lot, but aside from the Sleeping Bag, Shovel, Kitty liter and Car Jack etc, it all fits in the Rubbermaid container once I get the clothes packed down tight in large ziploc bags. I've never run into an emergency where I've need this stuff in the two years I've been carrying it in the vehicles, but we have used it numerous times out of convenience. Unexpected cooler weather, stuck in a traffic jam for hours and hours, stained my shirt while away from home etc. Both my wife and I drive a significant amount for work so it's nice knowing we have this stuff. Even if the weather turns and we decide to stay at a hotel last minute at least we have a change of clothes and hygiene items etc. I'd rather not pay $18.00 for the travel kit at a hotel just to get a razor etc.

You might want to think of getting a hand pump with a 10' draw. Why? if the power goes out, how are you going to get fuel for your vehicle. You can make a double stage hand pump out of seamless metal piping, with leather flap valves and a fuel grade hose. A 10 ‘ draw? You may be sucking up gas from the bottom ¼ of the tank. :geek:

Of all the survival stuff I keep in my car the only thing I ever used was the steak knife and flashlight. My car broke down and I forgot my cell at work. There was no way I was sitting there all nights on a back road so got out and walked 2km in the dark. I was totally aware that steak knife was a false sense of security but at that minute I was choosing to BELIEVE! Crazy I know, practically every person I know said, 'a woman shoul NEVER do that' ya well at that point I was so mad at myself I would have kicked some serious but. lol

    Well Belle_Rose

the best defence is a good offense and the mental ability at the same time. With the right willpower, motivation, training and thought process you can overcome most anything thrown at you.

    Good on you Gal!
