Um... why would you want them? Do you know how to prescribe these medications? What class of antidepressant they are? Side effects? Interactions with other medications? What the potential risk is of outdated drugs of this kind? It's not like they are some general use drugs like analgesics or antibiotics...

All valid points JAB / not 100% sure that I do want them / just know that I currently have them on hand & for sure want to research them - hence the question / think having the ability to calm someone down who's coping skills may not be all together there is not such a bad idea / for the record drug is amitriptyline
Amitriptylene is a dangerous antidepressant, a tricyclic. Too much can kill you as it is cardio toxic. Better drugs to calm someone down in the short term would be Ativan (lorazepam), Oxazepam or the well known Valium.. really any of the benzodiazepines. They can also be used for substance (alcohol) withdrawal symptoms as they increase the threshold for seizures and reduce tremors. Persoanlly I'd take them to a pharmacy for disposal.
JAB
I agree that the anti depressant should be taken for disposal, the wrong type or dosage can have drastic effects on a person. I have been on them in the past and one lot left me a shuffling wreck. It is very much trial and arror as to whether they are effective for each person. Some people swear by the Shuffle makers..

To all concerned with respect to the meds / recieved some professional advice on them & concur disposal is the way to go / was paid to clean the house & did not want to just through them in the trash, so had to hang onto them for either proper disposal or stores / they will be properly taken care of today / thank you again to my source for the advice & to others that voiced their concerns

Given that I've been ill all week with this horrible cold strain going through the Hamilton area, not toomuchprepping has happened other than me watching an awful lot of prepping videos on Youtube...I finally got out of the house today. I've been cooped up for 7 days and going stir crazy.
Middle of last week I pressure cooked, pureed and dehydrated 5 lbs of sweet potatoes I had lying around needing to be dealt with...blended them into powder and now I have some very tasty instant sweet potatoes...they more or less fit into a pint jar when finished.
So husbandface took me out grocery shopping and to the Dollar Tree...not much new there but I stocked up on two more dental floss (Glide $1.25!!! cheapest anywhere as Walmart is $3.88 for similar size and type Glide floss) and two each of peroxide and rubbing alcohol each $1.25 and good till 2015! Also some cheapie thin paper plates 50ct for $1.25, and three European made large chocolate bars- $1.00 ea...if they're good, I'll go back for more to put into stores.
Also picked up a 100ct box of garbage bin bags (the big black ones for curbside garbage bins) while at Walmart, we really don't use them but they are needed for preps. I find the Walmart at 20 hwy and Rymal Rd has the best stock/selection of all the Walmarts in the Hamilton/Ancaster/Stoney Creek area. I think because they cater to a more rural community...I also find the staff their very good at helping you in the store.
I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband

Re: Pressure CANNER not cooker

welcome to the board, yes many of us do indeed do alot of canning, be it water bath or pressure canning, while all canning is indeed done at your own risk, its funny for those of us that have been canning along time to watch the fades come and go.. canning in the oven (which now is considered a N.A. huge NO, is still done in England by thousands a year with no issues), the thousands that still open kettle can, (another now big NO-NO), water bath canning veggies that are now considered only pressure canner safe, and the lists and new do and don't come and goes over the years..
I have canning books that date back to the dirty 30's and forward, I will admit straight up that on some things I follow the rules and regs and I don't can with all the extra's or light this or that, I still with the tried and true recipes from my family, they are heavy on acid, salt or sugar, and they will hold for years in the pantry and still be good in the end.
Having said that, I do agree if in doubt of a seal, throw it out.
The joy of putting up hundreds or thousand plus jars a canning season is that you get a very good feel for things, start with the jams and jellies, work over to sauces and pickles, then up to fruits, veggies and meat.
what kind of meat are you planning on starting to learn on?
I am doing a very old perserving idea this year, its from ireland in the newly published forgotten skills cookbook by Darinna Allen (love this book!), you make your heavy sugar marmalade and you seal it with clean rendered hot lamb fat, to use, you crack your fat, take out your jam, rince the jam off the lard, re-heat and repour it.. Heads up, this would NOT pass a food safety rules but really its just confit for jam, very interesting really..
Love making confit, which is perserving cooked meat in fat, another old skill that we don't see often in N.A. that is still alive and well in europe.

Hey Farmgal:
I just pressure canned chicken off the bone last week. It's my first attempt and it went really well (chicken was readily available so it became my default test meat). I'm not sure about canning in the oven, as I've heard jars can break but my mom used to talk about using rendered hot fat to seal things in jars as a preserving method. That's part of why I like the Blue Ball Canning book because it dates back to talking about victory gardens. Most books that are older are the ones with the best time tested wisest recipes in them. I'm trying to expand my library and my knowledge. Learning to cook from scratch and have finally completed an edible bread! (I know, I know, I can but still am learning to bake?? Kinda cart before the horse). BTW nice buggy & fabulously beautiful horse in the early pic.
