I have bars on all my basement windows. They are available from Canadian Tire. Not too expensive. They lock from the inside and are very tough. You would need a hacksaw or torch to get through them. I don't think they are the kind of home "fortress" that the municipalities are concerned about. Besides, let them catch me. 🙂
