So in being new here I am unsure if this has been covered, but I'd love some feedback. I have a family of four with two small children (4 and 6) and we rent the house we live in. We would love to buy our own place sometime but right now it is not feasible. Our preps rely pretty heavily on the bug-in strategy but who knows what can happen. If we were forced to leave our home our plan at the moment would be to take anything useful and essentially go long term camping. Now, that being said I live on the north island where our winters (well most seasons actually) are very wet and can be cold. Of course shelter would be huge, with heating coming in a close second. I am very close to purchasing a Utah 10 person tent from the camping equipment company (anybody have anything to say about this tent?) for my family to use if such a scenario unravelled. Is this a feasible option? Is there another route I could go that I'm missing here? Obviously this problem weighs heavily on my mind so I would appreciate any insight from the group. Thanks all!

SURE buy the tent it will be useful. IMO I would recommend learning about shelter building. There are many different kinds that can be built and although harder to set up than a tent its going to provide you with allot more. Shelter from debris, coolness from the sun, insulating qualities, BIGGER, protection from predatory animals, food security. Lots of pluses here. Use the tent till your shelter is up and just hope its not the rainy season either way.

I also strongly suggest you do your work without power tools, again for many reasons,... fuel, mechanical breakdowns, noise, weight. In a Bug out situation for whatever you are going to be thrust into the wild where there is plenty of material to build with. Think pioneering and your on the right track. Keep your eye out for very small wood stoves. I actually found one that was very very small and passed it up due to a missing foot. Kicking myself badly now! YES you can make a small stove but the material is light and doesnt hold heat well.

When I go it will be very light indeed. There is nothing to steal and nothing to fail.

Just my thoughts! 🙂

Whatever tomorrow brings,… I will be there! 😉

Tents suck for a whole bunch of reasons! Have you considered some sort of recreational vehicle; perhaps a tent trailer or small travel trailer? This will solve your short to medium term shelter problem - dry warm shelter - should you need to bug out. Keep in mind that a larger tent is heavy and takes up a fair amount of space, so you'll likely need a trailer for it and all the extras. Most of what you need is already built in in a small RV, including a furnace. Trust me when I tell you that after spending several years rough camping there's nothing like the warm steady blast of warm furnace heated air blowing over your dry bed clothes as you sleep. Get up off the ground the stay dry.
