So I came up with this today. I figure there is enough there to keep you going a few days at least... possibly much more depending on your skill level. The idea is to have this on you ALL the time. When you are in your vehicle... it is too. When you camp, and drop your big bag and go searching for firewood or water... its on you. Your thoughts?

Survival in a bottle.

-Paracord in pouch
-Bottle has bottom cut off. Can use it to drink out of, shovel/scoop with, eat out of
-cooking pot and stand
-bandaids
-tylenol
-fishing line/sewing line
-2 fish hooks
-2 flat head nails
-trip/trap wire
-tooth brush/tooth paste
-sugar
-candy
-gum
-twist ties
-nylon string
-survival bivy
-survival blanket
-knife
-matches
-fire starter kit
-steri wipes
-paper
-pencil
-pencil leads
-whistle
-compass
-fire sparker

Thanks Goldie. Just to add... I think the toothbrush and toothpaste is a waste of space... I think a tampon and pad might be a great addition for injuries and filtering etc. I think I will steal some of those from my daughter and mortify her right good. lol.

Great stuff buddy. Some good ideas you got going on, but that's not all. You posted some wonderful and descriptive photos which brings me to another point, and I'd hate to hijack this thread.

But this forum has serious issues with people not posting photos, and I think that's definitely why it's not as popular as it should be, let's face it, people love photos. They like to see what it is, see the creativity involved and get a description and review. I'm going to be doing the same in a bit I'm just waiting for two more items to complete my EDC bag. Amazon's being a dick.

Very nicely done man.

where do get those army canteen things ? is there a nice canadian online store ?

May I add that perhaps it would be a good idea to give the source to find the container and some of
the items in our similar posts ? 🙂

You can grab the steel cup here or at an army surplus I believe.

I got one of these, very similar design. It fits a 32 ounce Nalgene bottle of water perfectly.

I believe you can cook with both of them on hot coals and use tin foil to cover the top so ashes don't get in.

Looks like it. Bit of a modification. but hey, you still have a cool pack with a steel cup you can cook with.

Nice idea cutting the bottom off the canteen.
Makes great storage space and easily accessible.
You can still use it to gather water...just not so great for carrying water around, but the number one rule when lost is to STAY PUT!!!

When I worked at an army surplus back in the 90's, we sold those cups used for dirt...can't remember exactly, but they were cheap.
One bonus of buying used at a surplus store is that you are getting authentic military grade...not a knock off.

Although I really REALLY wish that were true, it's not. Worse, it's GROSSLY overpriced then anything you could find off of Amazon or other places. An outdoors shop in Toronto, Al Flahertys just started selling Kabars for their actual price of 70-80 with tax. The Army surplus in Kensington Market, Toronto sells em for 160-180, not only that but you're buying stuff off of the most disgusting human beings imaginable. Manipulative people who don't pay legal minimum wage, terrible sales people, they'll lie straight to your face. The one on Yonge street sells knockoff condor and maxpedition products, I found out because one of these bags split open on me, although they're much nicer salespeople, and I will return to them.

Some of these reasons are my fault. You need to really comb through these surplus places. I always refer to amazon.ca, or knife center.com. Always look for a reference and always search for reviews.

Seriously?
USED knockoffs?
I agree that lot of the stuff in surplus stores are knock offs...believe me, I worked at one for 5 years, and I've heard all the crap
"It's made by the same company that makes them for the military"
"they are made to the same specs"
it goes on and on...
but I can't recall ever seeing USED knock offs.

Thanks for all the positive posts gang. Keep it up. I hate trolls. 🙂

I picked the canteen up at the army surplus store in Inglewood in Calgary. You can get metal too. I mulled this over for some time. I have a stainless steel nalgene type water bottle so for carrying... that one does the trick. I like to put hot water in it at bedtime too. Because of that, I opted for the plastic so I could take the bottom off it and use it as shown. Nothing but a quick flip upside down and you can drink from it, carry snow in it, carry water in it, shovel dirt with it I imagine... whatever your mind comes up with. In essence... this is now a hardshell case for my stuff but you have the stove bottom, a steel cup and a large plastic cup out of the deal. Something I havent seen yet in any other storage concept to hang on your belt.

I have noticed over the past 20 or so years that the army surplus stores have gotten pretty greedy in their pricing. I understand... its a business and people get into business to make money so I cant really fault them all. Prices have definitely gone up because hey... surplus is cool and trendy. Bummer though.

Great price on that web find there... $9.99? wow. I think my container and case plus stove and cup was about $50 if I recall? I bought it last year so not 100% sure on it.

As for posting pictures... I totally agree... I search the web and start with images first. Forums I gravitate again towards images over writing. It goes a long way in catching interest but also helps to show rather than tell. Set yourself up with a photobucket account and upload your pics there. click on the box that says IMG and it will say "copied" and then you right click in this box you are typing in and paste it. Simple stuff.

Cheers gang

It definitely is worth folks putting in their "stuff to copy pile"!

So what is TGIF?

Goldie suggested that I use something as a parameter search so folks could easily find info I'd designed for their "Prepper" collecting. I then tried various tests and found it should be something unused in this forum so as not to be mixed up with all the other threads when doing the search. Eventually I just went with TGIF (go ahead and guess all you want) 😆

Others should feel free to join in but try to first imagine if the subject matter is specific and useful for such as it simplifies things for those who cruise for such. Maybe Denob is interested in creating a section for this instead? I dunno, just a thought (in fact I think Goldie even suggested that thought too) 😉 Whatever works!

I too think this is a great post... I can't say I'd have thought of hacking up a nice canteen but it is a cool secret stash for this kit.

I just had my own thought (a brain fart really)

If your going to have fish hooks in this kit, to maybe suggest it be a pickerel rig or 2 or 3 (their small). This is because you can use these without the need of sitting there all day as you might have other things that need doing. These rigs can use just earth worms on each hook for bait, a small stick for a bobber, and a rock for the sinker. Toss a few in in different spots and come by later to see if you caught something. Here's a video for those who might need a better clue as to their usefulness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUpIS8m-j1g#t=33

Very Creative ScottyRE, I give you an A+ on your term paper. 😆
