Hey there bonavista lady and other south Calgarians... I'm in fish creek also. Send me a mssg if and when we can meet up and just make a friend or three to start things off. Cheers

Welcome RabbitTeeth and greetings from Northern Ontario
I guess i live in south Airdrie but I think it is just far north Calgary
Things I say are my opinion, which is like belly buttons everybody has one.
Anything I say is not meant to anger or offend just to encourage discussion between adults.
Hi all, I'm new to the forums as well. Probably the only downtown Calgary prepper, located just north up the hill overlooking Eau Claire in Crescent Heights.
I bet you're not the only one there.
That hill it's a good spot to check on the riots when they start 😆

I hope I'm not the only one in Crescent Heights or the inner city! I think we should start a locations thread, where people can map themselves (at least the quadrant or even neighborhood). That way, when the world ends, we can wander around to neighborhoods with more preppers.
I think you will find that most people on here are less then willing to post their locations on this message board (too many eyes can read it) even if it is generalized. I myself am in the city, but not within walking distance of crescent heights, and you are definatley in the opposite direction of where I would be heading when shtf.
See you all after.
Just curious - since I'm a newbie prepper - what sort of precautions are people taking regarding their identity, and why? I can see the possibility of unwanted attention in the event that something bad happens and it is well known that you have available resources, but other than that... are there any other reasons I might not have considered?
Opsec - operational security.
Basically means don't let anyone know anything that may lead to a breach in you and your groups security. That can include everything from what you have, where you are, where you are going, who else is involved, etc. Your preps should be on a need to know basis. The major reason being as you stated. People may not show an interest in what you are doing until the shtf... And then they will remember that "so and so has this... Let's go get it" leaving you on the hook to help them or defend yourself from them. It is a lot easier to get things done when you don't have to answer to people. Also, I wouldn't tell a stranger on the street where I live... Why would I tell a stranger on the message boards.
Further more, some information may be personal and sensitive. Something like a license plate (as albertaprepper pointed out) is as good as a bank account number, social insurance number, and home adress to someone who knows how to back track the paper trail. The southern group has been meeting so bonds of trust can be formed between members of the board, but it takes a long time to build that kind of trust up.
But then again, I could meet with someone 1000 times, and I still may not tell them where I live. You just have to use common sense. As to my own "identity protection", I can only tell you one thing that I follow as a golden rule...
Do not tell anyone how I protect my identity.
See you all after.
Still wouldn't mind a meet up with some members from the south end. Trying to build a little trust and build a pod of supportive people closer to my home. Find I learn a lot when I meet with folks. Have some ideas of my own to exchange. Message me.
Well I take it everyone in the south end has a plan and a group to rely on in the event of problems. Still think there's more safety in numbers and options for barter, group purchases, having someone to watch your back while you access a water source, etc. but If there is no particular interest I'll let it be. Contradicts most of what I've learned about sensible prepping but then I have my little group so I feel relatively secure. I leave the invitation open to those of you who would like to meet or talk on line about my thoughts about pods or small groups in different parts of town and the logic of this approach. We all have special skills and strengths to offer in my opinion. Two plus heads are better than one.
there are meetings set up on a regular basis now. there is one this coming sunday in fact. feel free to attend, and start networking with those preppers in your area if you desire. thats why we have them.
See you all after.
I'm in the south end, put together a few BOB's and now hoping to test them in the cooling temperatures. Hope there are one or two of you who would like to do the same. Think of it as camping buddies. I don't feel overly safe camping alone usually so hoping for some backup. This isn't about learning what you got. It's about safety and making new friends that could in turn be a partner down the road (or not). I would like to get out soon before the temps drop too much and then again later as the snow does fall. 4 season survival is critical and it starts with testing gear.
Send me a pm.
Cheers,
Scotty

How about we start with a hike in the city? There are a few parks in Calgary like west Fish Creek, Nose Hill, Weaselhead, where you can actually hike for a few hours. Then we can stop and have an MRE picnic, talk, get to know each other, test some equipment with the convenience of being close to your home etc. Then we can go from there. I wouldn't go camping with somebody I've just talked to on a forum. Don't take it personally.
Hey Prom, valid point. I would have to put my mind around what kind of BOB I would set up for a couple hour jaunt but there are things that can be tested like stoves, fire starting kits, footwear and clothing layers depending on the weather we luck out with, bag comfortability and so on. Lets see who else can chime in on this and aim for this coming weekend. I live right on Fish Creek so it's easy to get to.
