I don't know a lot of kids that want a pressure canner under the tree but there are some things that kids like and will add to our preparedness... this is what i could come up with... I'm sure you can think of more:
2-way radios
sling shot
swiss army knife
pellet gun,or 22.
cross bow
good flash light, i like this wind up one from ikea http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30190857/
snow shoes
toboggan
a good compass http://www.leevalley.com/en/gifts/page.aspx?p=45180&cat=4,104,53221&ap=3
silver jewellery
Maybe...
One or Two person hiker tent
Sleeping Bag
Telescopic Fishing Rod or a hand line
Fish Net
🙂
Depends on the age and sex of the kids. When my nieces were younger I always gave a "craft" kit-weaving, knitting, sewing, rug making, candle making. You get the idea.
Oops forgot my nephew. I always asked my sister for her ok - wood building kits such as bird house, stone carving, wittling book with a small knife & wood.
That way the learn some skills at an early age, it doesn't piss my sister off and I am the only one who realizes that it's getting prepared. Lol
Telescope, you both learn Night time Navigation together. Telescopes can also be used as spotting scopes with the right eye piece!
Or maybe a spotting scope to view the wildlife, together. This way you can teach them Trees, plants, animals camouflage, etc etc. Good for both Boys and Girls.
Boys Camo .22lr
Girls Pink or Purple .22lr
Get them to shoot now, get them interested then when and if there is a full breakdown they can help the family and contribute by getting tree and roof chickens!
Hiking Boots
Gaters
snow shoes
skis/cross country skis, telemark skis
a Toboggan that is bigger, so it can be used by the family for winter camping trips.
Compass, as in Silva Compass that way they can use it for signalling as well and learn the Canadian Military way. I can send you Cadet training material on compass and map use to assist as well.
Why not make them a Mountain Man Survival kit!
make them a special EDC or small bug out pack;
** firestarters x3 or x5 different ways to start fires
compass
map
MRE's
knife
esbit stove stand
cat can stove
Military Water Bottle with Canteen cup
Tea/Soup/coffee - decaf for kids and dogs!
SAS survival manual
etc etc.
Then go and spend some time with them out in the bush, hiking around and sharing with them! Maybe make one for the Wife/Husband - spouse as well, family time spent being out and about, learning etc.
** water/wind proof matches
** cotton balls dry - cotton balls rolled in Petroleum Jelly
** striker/flint/magnesium
** zippo lighter in ziplock
** sting for a bow drill
just my .02c worth
Morning All,
Interesting and timely topic.
Maybe a homemade gift may such as the many versions of the Hobo Stove you can find on YouTube.
Here is a link to one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmAP4kv5O8c&feature=related
I have not viewed this exact video, minor computer glitch this morning, but I have enjoyed watching many YouTube clips in the last while. With a cutlery basket from Ikea or a couple tin cans, you can build a very functional wood burning backpack stove. Most convert easily to use a beer can alcohol stove as well.
You can never go wrong by giving a well made knife
A Silva Compass - model Ranger. There will be a number 15 in there some where.
I guess that is it for now.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
PS - Here is the video I found interesting. For a homemade tin can stove. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN30_tG7S3A
Here's a cool item - a "stardial" from Lee Valley

A COFFIN!!
A sobering reminder, nighthawk! Maybe you could put it on end, add a few shelves and store some preps til ya needed it! And, if you starve to death slow enough, you could problee fit a couple bodies in it when the time came!
At the risk of shameless self promotion, paracord bracelets, or kits to make your own found on the CPN homepage.
If your home library contains more volumes about survival-related topics than your local public library, you might be a prepper.
Why buy stuff for someone who doesnt want to prep. Besides the world ends before xmas lol.
for kids: doodle pads and pencil crayons, paints, crafts, etc.
for grown-ups: home baking......and the recipe ...... in a tin with instructions on it's re-use as a Faraday cage.
A COFFIN!!
Nighthawk,
LMAO!!! Okay Christmas with non-preppers is not high on your fun list. LOL.
Maybe a small photo of a picture of the Mayan Calender, would be a fitting card to go with your coffin, body bag and barrel of lye. How we have become hard and cynical of those whose do not want to take care of themselves. Where has our humanity gone??? Triaged away I guess.
Making a list and checking it twice,
Mountainman.
Well i just figure if someone doesnt want to prep then thats ok but dont think that your gona get hand outs. I dont think the world will end or that dec 22 will be different from the 19 or 20 but sht hits the fan everyday now and just because its not on my step yet doesnt mean it wont show up. If non preppers dont pay attention the the last present they may get will be a coffin. The world is the way it is partly becouse of poeple that simply depend on everyone taking care of them. Prepping is about being independant, taking care of yourself and surviving.
For a 14 year old girl and her 11 year old brother under parental supervision,
With a hope and a prayer it will teach them what real money is.
Than= I’d rather be rich than poor.
Then= I first became hungry then I ate.
There = She is there now.
Their = They have their things.
They're = They're going to the mall.
To = They came to the house.
Too = That's too bad.
