Despite the weather right now, I find myself in the garage taking the bike racks off my wife's car and replacing them with ski racks for cross country skies. We are going to go out this afternoon unless I am able to make her see reason 😉 Thankfully, I looked in the trunk and there is an emergency bag just in case we run into trouble on the roads. We have dry and sweet food stuffs, warm clothes, blankets, water, a three wick candle that will burn for days, a deck of cards, an aluminum shovel, a small crow bar, flares, cables, and caution tape. I've got a similar bag in my work truck as well with the addition of many more tools, a fire extinguisher and a formidable first aid kit (all work related). This is one of the preps that we took on years before we ever considered actual prepping. It was just a matter of living in Canada and trying to be smart about it.
What do you keep in your vehicles in case of trouble? I haven't been so stuck that I've had to overnight in the ditch so haven't put my emergency bag to the test.
Add to this:
Sleeping bag(s)
Mean of charging cell phone or tablet (extra cable with cigar lighter plug or USB port if you have one). You'll appreciate that if you are stranded overnight in your vehicle!
I have a -40C survival suit that I got from work a few years back. I hardly ever use it so it just stays in the vehicle in winter. It's better than a sleeping bag because it's like a regular pair of coveralls except really, really warm and you can walk out with it if you needed to.
Sounds like a good Test ...I carrya most of the things you have all said, I also keep fire starting materials, a hatchet, a toiletries kit ( if ya gotta go better to have a sanitary system figured), a tire repair kit + pump.
A mess kit & tea billy are essentials. I also have food and water for my dogs, their not always with me, but often enough to warrant a small stash for them.
Things I say are my opinion, which is like belly buttons everybody has one.
Anything I say is not meant to anger or offend just to encourage discussion between adults.
I carry some things not mentioned much elsewhere , boltcutters, hack saw , wrecking bar , siphoning hose , small fuel recepticle... not for any unethical purpose but I always figure if in an extreme crisis these sort of open options, for instance if you needed to open a locked gate on a forestry road or break into a building for emergency shelter . The most I have ever needed them for is getting myself back in when I have locked myself out but it sure comes in handy to not be locked out inadvertantly of where you keep your tools too : ) I tend to carry a few different lengths of rope for securing a load or pulling people out of ditches that has proven to come in handy to help others and when I needed assistance. A change of footwear , extra socks and a pair of hiking boots hasn't been mentioned but is pretty practical for when your choice of footwear was not intended for a crisis situation. Good grief this thread makes me think I should go through and streamline some of it for the current season though. One thing I carry and have not used recently but might keep is a silver windshield reflector from summer to keep the heat out , might keep that to use to insulate to keep warm sitting on it and an insulated cooler for summer might serve well to keep feet warmer , or is that just rationalizing clutter?
