Sits a genny...Ok maybe not that deep, but mostly underground...This box was constructed for a different project maybe 9 years back, but I just couldnt get enough yellow cake so that project ended, It has just sat as is, all this time... I decided that when that genny goes on sale again I am going to pick up another for 200.00 and I am going to use this enclosure for it. Now this enclosure is more than needed. I pulled the baffle seperating the engine side from the exhaust expansion side as I am making changes to it, but you get the idea. I have been testing it with the genny I run my chain saw with. The box goes quite deep, you could even fit a body in there 😯 , So I had to raise up the genny by stacking 2x4s then plywood and then another base that has wheels on it and then the genny sits high enough I can reach the pull cord and controls, there is a fan powered by the genny that brings in fresh air and pushes out exhaust, I will spare you the details....but this is absolutly undetectable when running you can be sitting on this box and not feel or hear a thing, the box including the hinged top is made up of layers of plywood sandwitching foam board, one layer of 12 gauge steel even, the lip is of over lapping construction, and the whole thing waterproofed. then 6 inch r20 rigid insulation surounds the below grade box.
For those bugging in....silent, undetectable power generation.

Good idea! I have my genny in it's own metal shed but it gets very warm in there in the summer. I will now insulate it to help with the heat and the sound.

I like the idea of that kind of lockable vented "bunker" to store 5-gallon gas cans in. It could be located away from the house and outbuildings, less visible to inquiring eyes, and still be accessable.

over the years I have had some missadventures with genny's the last was when testing my new charger I left it running while I drove to the big city Leduc( did you know it now has a downtown airport, private joke for edmontonians)
I musnt have tightened the oil fill plug, and it vibrated out and lost its oil, not much the thing only holds a half liter but still it ran over my deck before the low oil shutdown cct turned it off...... I will still keep it close to the house for emergencies, but I am leaning toward this as a better place to run a genny from, one thing is I may have to put a counter weight (or spring assist, on that lid to aid in opening it, its heavy and I have to put my back into it, while no problem now who know's what another decade will bring. I am changing it so I can use just the top part off the lid for exhaust expansion (right hand side in that pick), and the bottom right hand side will be a seperate compartment just for gas storage, may even add a few controls that can be operated outside the box like a shut off switch, choke adjust, self destruct switch....

And warm is bad, you will note I have the end bell off on that genny, the baffle thats pulled out at the moment has another fan mounted on it, its purpose is to blow air straight into the alernators windings. I pay a penalty of about 20-30 watts to run the fan, but I can milk another 150-200 watts out of that alternator without burning it up, not that I need the extra power but still is nice to run everything cooler.

this pic shows better that its under ground, the back of the box is flush with the ground and the front of the box is out of the ground a few inches as its on a hill a bit.

I almost forgot, right beside this box is another engine alternator set up, but waaaay bigger...a big single cyl diesel engine and its belted up to a huge alternator, I open the doors when this one is run, but look at the exhaust, its run out to a old presure tank that goes down maybe 4 feet underground, the gases have to spiral down and then come up the exhaust pipe in the middle, almost no noise...this engine has a huge stroke and bore, I can put my fist in the cylinder its so big yet I can get the exhaust noise down to a level thats = to a smoker going up a set of stairs. if this unit was run in someone back yard it could only be heard by someone nextdoor with super hearing...

people who tell you, you cant run a genny in the city...people will hear it ...havent tried, havent tried to supress the noise, in fact I just remembered I could run a huge diesel like this absolutly silient.. no noise at all standing right beside it (its erie), there is a way, If I remember right it worked great but I had to pull the head at 300, maybe 400 hours as I started getting carbon build up in the head, no big deal a half hour down time and away it went again, what I am saying is there is lots of ways to skin this cat..try some..

Here is a pic with the center baffle in place, rigged for silent running....
