Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it

The gold mines near here are now laying folks off and running on low production. They are the biggest in North America and I have no clue as to what this would mean but I'd figure when gold mines do such things...it's likely not a good sign as they too are American owned!

Duffman: SilverGoldBull is based out of Calgary but I don't know if they have a physical store. I've bought online from them and it turned out to be a good experience.

Antsy,

I swear I have no particular interest in any companies tied to PMs, but I don't think that banks offer the best deal out there. Case in point : https://www.scotiamocatta-estore.scotiabank.com/stores/scotiamocatta/catalog/product.aspx?nst=e1Jx5fEpI35oEfxPgwuVwE43m6Im37ea07Uf8UDmvVVM4%2f6TYyHmTipw7DFl5sxOi9NHQ%2b8PvkQ%3d vs https://silvergoldbull.com/silver/1-oz-2015-canadian-maple-leaf-silver-coin . Scotia also charges a commission fee on top of shipping charges...

Anytime I'm looking for something local I open Google maps and search there. I searched bullion in Calgary and found albern coin as well as http://www.diverseequities.com
Today for silver maple leaf or other 1 oz coin
Scotia $26.23
Diverse Equities $24.12
Albern- got tired of looking (sold out, collector price etc)

Yes the website sucks, but call first for a spot price. Go in, buy what you want and leave. Simple as that.

Old thread but I have a question and hope someone much smarter than myself can help. Hope to buy a little silver as a small savings since money is tight. I noticed Canadian maples at 26 and change but also saw just plain 1oz bars for like 24 dollars and change. Both seem to be 999% pure. Any particular reason to buy the coins compared to the plain Jane bars?

Thanks!

It's a bit like Cambell soup and President Choice soup. Taste the same, look the same and may even come from the same plant, but the Campbell soup is name brand so you pay a bit more.

Same thing with the maples. Because they are more easily recognizable and accepted as "the" coin from Canada, they are pricier.

There is nothing wrong with getting either unless you plan on exchanging them in foreign locations. Suggest you save paying the premium and get bars. So long as you buy them from a reputable place and the bars are from a recognizable mint (sunshine for example) there would be no problem.
