Re: True polar wander or Poleshift

by icrcc » Tue Nov 06, 2012 3:01 pm

Pole shift refers to the movement of the axis of the Earth. We know that True Polar Wander does occur. This is the slow movement of the Earth's surface with respect to the axis of rotation. There are a number of causes (about have a dozen) for this movement, some are cyclic some are not. Generally this movement is very slow i.e. 1° per 26 million years! However it can occur at a faster rate. The Earthquake that struck Japan last year moved the axis by about 25cm. It doesn't sound much but it is significant. There is evidence that in the geologically past, less than a billion years ago, the axis moved more than 50° twice. That was a very long time ago.

Earthquakes, other tectonic events, asteroid impacts and glacial cycles are causes that can cause rapid (geologically speaking) movements of the axis. We have been getting more severe earthquakes of late and we know that the ice caps are melting. Does that mean we are in for a major pole shift? The answer is we do not know.

This is a fascinating experiment done to a guy to convince him the world ended. Worth watching.

I was discussing SHTF warning signs with my friends today.
Some of the warning signs that we considered were:
-No electricity for more than 2 days
-No water for more than 2 days
-No cell phone, cable or internet for more than 2 days
-Debit and credit functions stop working and many people are withdrawing money from the bank
-Grocery stores are having food shortages

So, these guys over on the Island did a 3 day tour where they could only bring 8 items. Sounds fun actually.

So, the question I propose to you... right now, if you had to throw on a back pack and boogie (assuming your single and have no family duties), aside from the clothes you put on and the bag itself... what 8 items would you take?

How about in summer?

This is just for fun to pick your brains.

assuming its for survival and escape, and the clothing I am wearing is seasonally appropriate, and its also for a 3 day time period:

topographical map of the area
compass
magnesium fire starter kit
bowie or kuhkri knife
military canteen/mess cup (assuming they count as one item)
100 ft of paracord
ruger 10/22 takedown rifle
box of .22 caliber ammunition

i would choose to go tool heavy, as it is alot easier for me to catch food, find water, and build shelter then it is for me to forge a knife or a firearm. interesting thought scottyRE. makes me rethink what is important to have in a bugout bag. you really dont need much for a 3 day period if you have a knowledge and the skills to utilize your tools.

for longer then 3 days, I would obviously have to re-think my approach, but I would probobly need more then 8 items. im interested to see what others have to say.

See you all after.

Just out of curiosity.

What about Zuzuki (a lobbyist who collects money from foreign groups to influence Canadian policy) inspires trust.

My partner and I are considering that if we each have an identical bug out bag then there might be redundancies. We were talking about making one bug out kit that is packed in two-separate backpacks containing different items. This is dangerous because we might get split up or we might not be together when the SHTF. I am a big guy, I could carry both of them. She is a foot-shorter than me and almost 100lbs lighter than me. Realistically speaking she might be hooped if both packs are too heavy for her. Is anyone out there in a situation where you are with a partner or children and you are planning on carrying everything or distributing the weight?
Anyone out there got any suggestions about good ways for me to disperse the weight of two bug out bags between me and my girlfriend?

I am making bug-out bags for my daughters and am concidering that given the season they might want different stuff in their bug out bags. Why carry a large sleeping bag in the summer-for example. I think one should have them packed and ready to go with alternates right handy. So if it's summer they can trade the large sleeping bag for a small one if they want -or strap on snow shoes if it suits the weather.
I'm wondering Cbrad if you should have a larger bag or an expandable one- and then if you and your girlfriend leave together you could take on extra weight, but still leave her with enough for her survival. Maybe you could take the tent and sleeping bag and leave her with a camo tarp and emergency blanket (not the thin silver but the quilted silver ones).

I wanted to put this video link under "knowledge is power" for the obvious reasons. Having been a fighter for many years, athlete, an archery enthusiast, a musician and an artist... I discovered long ago that I was only at the top of my game when I practiced practiced practiced. The same can be said for weapons. Watch this informative video.

You don't know what its like when there are rounds going off, all around you. Even on some military exercises, even when it just blank rounds, you get hyped. On a road ambush on a patrol, I've seen most people taking appropriate actions, and one becomes a Rambo, standing in the middle of the road firing his weapon....Dead. Unless you know that there are bullets coming your way, you will never know how you will re-act.

Just a reminder that there is a Google + community created that was voted best community of G+ for 2012 for Preppers. Myself and a few others are mods and could really use some wisdom from you guys. Its called Survival and Pararedness.

Speaking of the community, an interesting article was posted in it today regarding New York Preppers. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/27/nyregion/the-doomsday-preppers-of-new-york.html?pagewanted=2&_r=0&smid=go-share

Hope to see some of you guys there maybe.
