I want a 20 footer for sure, may take a 40 if the price is good, I am looking on kijiji now, but if anyone knows of any good deals in the from Edmonton to Red Deer area PM me.

Well one 40fter is in bound, I may have to reschedual delivery as heavy wet snow has turned the place muddy. I remember a thread where finishing a shipping container was discussed. I wont be finishing it for living but will be adding doors, windows, insulation, wood heat, and such. This will be a entire self contained movable, metal fab shop. I was going to put up a steel building, and that would be best, but I don't like what it would do to my taxes, or how that invites building inspectors, or code inforcement visits.
I will only get it here this year, and set up, put in place and painted. Finishing wont begin until next year. Not having a place to set all my metal working tools up in really slows down the projects I can build.
Good thing about these is no permits required, I can set it up, wire the container for power, pretty much do anything without issues from the county.

That seems like a good project idea. I'm wondering if there are bylaws about having such a structure on one's property (assuming outside of a city limits)?
The area I am in...no, not at this time, though what I have found happening from friends in different counties is if you sell your property sometimes they will try to hit you with a "development charge" claiming its a property development or improvement, This crops up at the time of sale, when the title needs to be transferred. this just happened to a friend last year, but she doesn't put up with much and told them where to pound it and they backed off. Just a way to scam money. Though I believe its important to get yourself set up in the ways you like as soon as you can, Everything is increasingly becoming so regulated, things you used to be aloud to do, now must be done by" approved contractors" or be permited. Good news for someone like myself who has been out here for decades is I am mostly well set up, so all the things I have done are grandfathered in.
I mostly do what I want and if caught play dumb, ask for forgiveness

so what did it cost ya? and how much was shipping? This is good info to know when considering options one has limited options available.
I'm betting a shipping container would still be considered a temporary structure in many places and therefore wouldn't raise ones property taxes. Also could be a bonus for those who are not allowed to build a permanent structure in their area, etc.
3400.00 for a 40 footer, that looks in pretty good shape, better than one I bought a few years back, Something like 350 for delivery if in a half hour of Edmonton, I had to pay more ofcourse for delivery. I am gong to stick it in amounst the spruce trees and give it a camo job. I will need to eat my Wheaties as I will have to move it about 50 feet from where he drops it, I will use jacks and prybars. Last time I did this it took me all day to move it maybe 20 feet and I lost 4 pounds that day, they are a monster to move by hand. I have a neibour with a bobcat that I could ask for a hand but I kind of like a challenge.

If the substrate is firm enough, try renting a couple of Johnson Bars. I have a couple of them in my shop and they get regular use. I once used one to move a scissor lift through a tight doorway and turned it 90 degrees so that we could get driving it again. They are really handy.
Needs must when the devil drives.
Peppercorn,
I'm sure we would all love to see this project going together....I hope you post lots of pics and explanations!!!
Also, since this is just a shipping container, could it not be loaded onto a flatbed to be hauled out...making it a temporary structure?
Johnson Bar? never heard of it, but that sure looks handy, I think building one will be on my to do list.
sure, I can take pics, and yes it can be hauled away that's why so far they arnt taxed though I see the day coming when they will, so get yours while you can, and set up so it will be grandfathered in without cost.

Done, didn't get the container in until the end of April, so couldn't start until may.
framed, insulated (r 12), wired, and wired with cat 5 end to end, lines for compresed air, 0xyacetylene, or welding gases built into the walls, and painted.
after
electrical outlets up high so there will be no cords to trip over (this is a workshop)
one person 50- 55 hrs labour the way I did it, and I move slow....that includes 3 coats of paint to the inside walls. No cutting, welding or having to penetrate the container, though I will have to cut into the sides when I add a man door and put in a wood stove.
two people would really be best on a project like this as it would really speed things up.

A metal fab shop? First thing I would do is plan for some ventilation. If I may ask what are you fabricating?
Jacking it up and slide some round timber logs underneath like the Egyptians did for the pyramid blocks. It may make it easier to push.
Attaching an I beem on the ceiling combined with an electric winch could help load and unload materials...
Looks like a fun project, I love working steel myself.
Well its purpose is as a better organized space for anything I construct but I am looking to put my attention to fabricating some custom built 3 wheel delta and tadpole recumbents with E assist, and fat tire ones since I have discovered the advantage of these on rough gravel roads.
Actually I am going to run unistrut channel down the length with a miller maxstar 150 pancaked up tight to the ceiling on a trolly. I just reach up and pull it down to the work station I need it at and plug it into the nearest outlet up at the ceiling, and I am ready to weld.
I have I beam for outside that a Kito electric chain hoist will run on for handling large heavy stuff.
Ventilation will be by fan when I put in the man doors mid way down the length of the container.
Its going to be tight, I even have a 4x4 burn table to try and fit inside.

So I had a little change of plans....it looks like I was going to have some extra room so I decieded to build in a electrical/mechanical repair and fabrication shop in with the metal shop....didn't take up to much room. this is turning into a real nice man cave...even have carpet on the floor for this part of the container better quality than I have in my house.
Just finished the overhead crane...I am getting to old for this heavy lifting of stuff, my back needs some alcohol therapy

cut the opening for the man door...going with a all glass door as it lets in lots of natural light---65 bucks from the re- store, I heavy commercial type door, haven't hit 1000.00 yet in finishing it to this point. just used a grinder and one 6 inch zip disk to cut the opening, maybe 20 minutes to cut
