So off to the big city I go..Ponoka. A toaster that was 59.00 dolllars is now, 29.00..Wow half price...cheap enough to play with..

Its so exciting getting a new toy...that fresh new product smell, the plastic, the bubble wrap, OH the bubble wrap, even a box for the cat to play with, or get put in..I can hardly contain myself..

first thing to do is plug it in and test it....it works, and the name plate spec is 1000 watts, I measure 964 watts. wow, think about that do you really need 1.25 hp to brown toast...I quess so cause they all say 1000 watts or more..Right, who am I to question that ...

Now so much for that myth you will electrocute yourself, look plugged in and my hand inside...you see electricity is like aresnic, the more you try it the better you develop a tolorance for it, so start playing with it early in life, give the toddler a fork and say have at it.
roll 1000 watts around in your noggin...its a lot of power..just to do a slice of toast..infact I think electric bikes are limited to under 500watts or so. (i have to check, so thats not a confirmed number), and that will propel a 200 pound meat sack along at 30km a hour or so.

At this point I realize I have made a misstake, you see I measured the power draw, but forgot to measure the total power draw over the time it took to cook a slice of toast, both measurment should have been taken to truly see what this thing uses to cook a slice of toast. I got lost in the excitment of the moment, got ahead of myself...been accused of that before, now its to late...and believe it or not this thing was put together using security screws...thats so funny, bet they are the most expensive thing on this toaster.
Now that I can examine this thing I really have lost interest in continuing, its such crap, I would rather be off trimming the dogs nails right now..but I will see this through I quess..to many people counting on me, to much hope..
I am already thinking, I would be better off building one from scratch, or Propane, is there such a thing, A propane toaster would be the way to go...I can hardly contain the thoughts..
?

So why don't you throw in a couple slices and do the test? Did you break it?

No I did not break it , but the case is off, and the circuit board that controls this toaster is mounted to the case part , and the wiring harness to the cct board is to short to plug in unless I put the case back on, but thats a pain in the ass, and actually I am a little further along than that pic shows, I have one of the ends off as well. not taking that second measurement is really going to hurt me, as I suspect I will be able to get the peak wattage draw down by at least half, but I think I can even shorten the time it takes to cook as well and that would show up as a even bigger savings, but oh well it is what it is.
Look at how crappy thats built....the nicrome wire must be seconds as its unevenly heating, look how far apart the nicrome plates are! hint I suspect there is a reason for that (not a good one). I noticed that toasters now have to be plugged in or you cant push the rod down and have it stay down..anyone else wonder why this is? it didnt used to be like that. I have discovered why...anyone want to guess? no Obama didnt have anything to do with it...

Picked one of these up a few weeks back. Works great but may change out cloth cord. This one is early fifties. Back then they sold for around $22. No pimping required 😀

Crap.. I just realized I said.... you should see my kettle collection....to a man....I never thought I would say that...to a man....let me add...I am also hitting milli arm and getting some stripper clips for my sks..and I will kick the dog on the way out the door...twice, 3 times if he doesnt stay down

Nothing wrong with collecting good old stuff...only if you talk to them...wait...only if you talk to them, and give them names...no wait, if you talk to them, give them names first and last then thats sick..somethings very wrong then.

But look what I got at the flea market...

20 bucks, brand new never used...and its a 400 watt unit...I would guess 1953, I can use it as a coffee maker, or electric kettle...did you know that you cant even buy a kettle less that 1500 watts now days...go to CT and check (I did) every one 1500 watts. (ok there might be some being made somewhere less than 1500 watts)
But here was my big score

25 bucks brand new, the only meat this has cut was my thumb when I touched the blade. again 1950's well built, I already have one but this has something on the name plate that you dont see anymore.

and no plastic anywhere...

OK, first test of this rebuilt toaster is coming in at 580 watts..hmm I thought I would get it lower than that, going to do some more testing, like I said this one is a poor candidate, but I am nearly at half for peak draw....you thought this thread was about a toaster, fooled you all..I am looking at getting back into modeling, .....I know I can make it as a hand model I just needed some practice and shots for my portfolio..

(something on the name plate that you dont see anymore) I am waiting?

prep2live, as the only one interested I will spare the others and send you a pm on this motor type. Yes it was made in canada but I lot of things were back then. 115 volts 7 amps dc 8 amp ac

Toaster still coming in at 580watts just cant get it better, I would have been better off to build from scratch, but that is nearly half the power it used. Looks like I failed on this one, I said I would get below half, but this one is so bad...bad nicrome, bad design, bad mechanical mech, a stupid soliniod, and unessesary circuit boards...
