Is it just me or have all the meet ups stopped people say they want to be in or make groups but no one shows up or even put in the effort to start one all most want is a free thing and not any work for it well that just sounds like what murauders do or is it just me I've been wanting to be part of a group for several years but no one sees to want the same thing
Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it
I hear your pain. There is a disconnect between what people say they want and what they actually do. We were expecting WWOOFers this week that didn't show. It has motivated us to take some radical steps in a different direction. Sounds to me like you also just had one of the big revelations. That most preppers aren't preppers at all but are just Marauders. All that James Bond "Training" is just thief training. Worse, armed thief training that they justify by believing that they are the prepared good guys. Its a pet peeve of mine.

Maybe I should just hang out with you guys lol but yeah I don't get it why people are not putting the effort in cause if something happens right now are you ready can you or your family protect yourselves or would a group have a better fighting chance

He's in jail right now for numerous parole violations...including handling firearms. 😉

Still I wonder how many preppers are like him
Not to mention the people who will become like him

For better or worse people in North America have not experienced long term national hardship such as the dirty thirties or the two world wars. Fires like the Okanagan Mountain fire that took 238 homes and several businesses in Kelowna in 2003 and Slave Lake in 2011 destroying 732 properties were localized events that got worldwide attention, but the rest of Canada was not affected. The Quebec Ice Storms and floods in Southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the past decade caused life changing havoc for those involved, but the rest of us needed only to switch the television off.
Most people, even most preppers do not feel any urgency.
I think as people wake up and begin prepping that in many cases they associate first with family, friends and neighbors who they know think the same way. For those who are not fortunate to have likeminded people around it then becomes difficult to find others to work with. I also believe that many well organized preppers have already teamed up with others and are not looking to add to the group.
Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...
I watched the Doomsday Preppers episode.
Natural selection...
I'm betting Tyler Smith won't need to worry about survival for long if SHTF.
Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...
Smith isn't quite the example I was talking about though there are several of him. I ment, the bug out type. You know the ones. They have a bunch of guns and a bug out bag and thinks this makes them prepared. They don't have more than a week of food or any experience in growing it but they do a lot a military training. All those folks that run out into the woods thinking its teaming with dear and berries. After a week.....all of them become marauders......or suicide victims. Just saying.
How often have you heard, "if the shtf Ill steal a car or a boat or raid the walmart or look for supplies in cottages". Marauders. Its looting if other people do it but salvage or resource allocation if they do it. These are the ones that say, "It will be every man for himself", or say "The sheeple" but really mean N****.
Don't even get me started on the, " I will shoot anyone that approaches my home, bunker or bug out location" types.
That's my rant.
C5 Rule of Survival- Assholes die first.

To be fair Duff, you have moved cities at least three times in the three or so years you have been active on this forum. From BC, to Calgary, to Lethbridge, to Red Deer.... according to your posts (I'm not stalking you.... honest 😳 ). There is a group in Calgary that met through the forum, tried some things out, vetted some folks out, and have slipped into the background. There may be others out there as well who are good with what they have, are quietly building on it, and just aren't advertising. It doesn't happen over night. It took the one group in Calgary that I know of a few years to build on. I think C5 has been at it for several years as well and believe that he would tell you that it's a work in progress.
My advice to you is to be patient. Instead of trying for a "group meeting", invite someone in your area out for coffee. If your goal is to build a community in your area and you really think you are going to stick it out there, make it a point to have coffee with someone every week for a year. Finally, be ready for a few setbacks along the way. As for marauders, I got nothin'.
Needs must when the devil drives.
I think Marauders won't do as well as they might hope because preppers who have supplies also have made plans to thwart people like that. The shows example has them startling an unprepared couple in bed. Most of us are arranging thing so that we will be on guard and have some warning that someone is near and they will certainly make noise getting thru our defenses -not just stroll in. For a few bucks you can put battery operated warnings if someone opens a door or window. That is the very least one can do and hopefully that is the outside door not the fortified one. People like marauders are just like any vermin you would keep from your supplies and will have to be treated that way. They won't deserve any more respect than the mouse getting into my rice or the rabbits in our gardens. Although we can eat the rabbit.
Good point Zana but a group of 20-30 is hard for one family to fight off
What would you suggest about those situations

Sorry antsy missed your reply
But I know your stalking me you just envy me so much ( insert finger in mouth and gag ) lol
But I was meaning in my times of doing stuff I've learned that most want a group but don't want to put the effort in the build on I'm always looking for new people and always travel places to meet so if anyone ever want to meet me most times I'll come to them experienced or even new to preparedness
I guess I'm always looking for new friends
So annoying one want to meet for coffee lol
Or chocolate milk as I prefer IDE rather drink vomit than coffee lol

Well for many people, having a chance to be featured on tv is their great crack at fame, likely only crack....if your not going to stand out by being rational, and practical, then being silly, dramatic and over the top will be your only chance at fame 🙄
You think this guy is a worry????? I wouldn't worry about him ....a clear candidate for a Darwin award if there ever was one, the reason lead paint was banned, a example of why you only donate your brain to science after you die, not while living, the order we do things is so important! I just couldn't watch the whole thing.
Now as to your first post I should probably just pass on commenting, and normally would but its been too hot to do anything including sleep so I will kill a few minutes ... remember you asked, so don't bitch if you get a answer you don't like!
The problems are three fold mostly
First problem..divisions. lets start with the name Preppers. it has or it did have, that momentum may be lost now but it should have been for those who are pro active, doing and learning things for a more durable type lifestyle, and I think that's inclusive of community...the one you live in and the greater one. There are such types on the boards learning ham radio for example, extensive gardening and such you get the idea...then there are those who should be by my definition be Survivalists those who's greatest plan is how fast to run away from "whatever" to live and roam in the wilderness or who plan great adventures making there way to their waiting BOL real or pretend, all the while armed, eager to "engage" so they may prove how capable they are despite the daming evidence to the contrary that leaving confirms. The two are not compatable the last should be on survivalist type boards with their own kind, ofcourse they wont stay there 🙄
This criticism is not meant of plans for getting out of a brush fire or moving away from a train derailment (chemical spill) type of situation.
If you think I am wrong find me someone who is fully (or even partialy) independent in heat, water, power (to whatever degree they need) security of property( I mean financial) , and to a great measure capable of some food production. I garranty you from such people there is no talk of Bug out, BOV, BOL, or any such thing period! (well yes BOV in the sense of moving from a fire or such) You only get that from people doing little and often none of what I have listed. Try and get a meet up of the two and it may happen.... once, but those capable and able will be looking at their watch and thinking "I wont get this time back". you wont ever see or hear from them again.
The Survival expo that some of you will be going to has cam at it, from what I have read from those who have attended he is well prepared and I suspect many here would trade places to be as secure and capable as he is. It may be the very goal people are aiming for. I have no memory of him ever posting of his BOL, BOV or any plans of running away anywhere...why don't you meet with him at the expo.. and for fun keep talking to him about Bugging out, BOl and BOV....He is a very polite guy but at some point I suspect he will tell you to bugger off.
2nd, there are those individuals who, I am going to use the word "dissingenous" to describe them (don't worry I am not naming them) Their prime point is to make contact for sales purposes, immediate or future. Or to Brand themselves as gatekeepers of knowledge, again for future sales or manipulation of others.... I have little problem spotting them, I suspect other see this as well, actually I have been told direct by others they are easy to identify .....again not a slam against those selling their extra garden produce, or offering trading framing help for electrical help for example.
3rd there are individuals who have made themselves radioactive, for a variety of reasons, including associations with others, and with them attending any function, will cause others to decline. This can include their Religious, political, social views, or maybe they just demonstrate stunningly bad judgement. ( like talking about parading around with their firearms in a city)
So Duff that's only three reasons why there are problems getting people together, I can come up with more 😉 Good news is people are finding their way around such problems by dealing with like minds privately through PMs and email, getting together that way. Just met up with two guy's from the forum for a coffee in Red Deer last week, a few others a couple months back.
Alberta has lots of very capable and able people, doing lots of interesting things.

Yup. Work in progress. Sometimes I want to pull my hair out. But the coffee meet a week is a noble goal. Also, It doesn't have to be preppers. I just did a month working at a local saw mill. The work was too hard to keep up at my age...but I now have a really good connection down the road...that happens to have a lumber mill. Tonight I go hang with some aging lesbian hippies with a straw bale house. Bonus for me because they have farm animal experience. I sooo want to make friends with a lawyer. You never know when you need a lawyer in a fight with another lawyer.
