I've ordered dog meat from the menu in both Cambodia and the Philippines. I thought it was quite tasty but my wife thought is was just OK.

I was at a small village in a remote Fiji island last Christmas and I'm pretty sure I was served dog meat. They laughed when questioned and said it was chicken.

I knew better.

Damn,
What has been seen, cannot be unseen. 😮

To each their own I guess but I agree that if you're down to eating fido to buy you a few more days; then it's not worth it to me. All I can think of is the last scene in the Stephen King movie "The Mist", which I won't ruin for those who haven't seen it. It is an interesting representation of group dynamics under pressure though.

As well, I can see by the posts that Crier has done a lot of work and put a lot of energy and thinking behind his preps. I can honestly say that I am envious. That said, I choose to disagree with his opinion on how to define a "man" versus a "boy". I don't 'feel' that the argument is even relevant as none of us know what we will be capable of once our children and dogs are starving and looking to us for a solution. I hope that we never had to find out but I too think that is overly optimistic.

p.s.
Yes, I am secure in my metrosexuality 😎

p.p.s.
I'm actually surprised that Denob didn't lock this baby down about a dozen posts ago when it was getting a bit side-tracked... 😳

I respect your choice.... BUT.... me as the leader and head of my home....sacrificing my dog to buy even one hour in a starvation situation could make all the difference on wether my family survives or not. Circumstances do change.

I lost my only son in a tragic accident. I was looked upon by my family to make decisions that were out of my control. Through utter anguish, I pulled my family together as husband and father.

I am quite confident that I can come up with simple solutions such as killing and eating my dog to feed my family as to survive another day...... well..... easy in comparison.

I am sorry for the loss of your son Crier! I can only imagine the tremendous pain that comes with that experience. I have no doubt you will do whatever it takes to see your family is alright under any circumstance...I believe cats are great for mousers/rat catchers (just read Medicine Hat had 80 killed rats , they say if you have 1 mouse you have 34 and a pair of mice can bread 3 million in their lifetime...cats serve a great purpose in my opinion and dogs are protectors, hunters, friends but not food (also in my opinion) thou I am certain you have compassion towards your dogs now you just feel that if circumstances changed & you would perhaps need to eat them you could do that too. You are entitled to make your own choices...I would have to pick "no".

There are several famous cases of people resorting to cannibalism to survive. I'm pretty sure that if they had been asked about eating long pig, before they were in those circumstances, they would have been disgusted at the idea. We can discuss the subject to death, but until a person is in that type of situation, they won't know. Desparate situations can lead to desparate acts. All the talk in the world means nothing because you will not know for sure until you come face to face with it. When that happens, Fido may start to look pretty appetizing (but I hope not).

A dog can be your most loyal freind, and most would put themselves in harms way to protect you. There the saying, "if you put your wife and your dog, in a trunk for ten minutes, when you open it, which one do you think would be the first one to give you a kiss." 😀

My husky thought it was very offensive! However I explained to her that we were only talking hypothetically. She did not believe me.

My two dogs provide security, therefor earning their keep. My cat keeps the mice at bay and kills the ones that would venture into the living or storage spaces, therefor earning it's keep. I prep to support every member of my family and my pets as well, as we all do things that earn our keep. If the situation got so bad that I had to consider eating one of my pets, then that would mean that all other resources of food, wildlife, plant, etc had been completely exhausted.

Could someone please explain to me what kind of SHTF scenario would see this happen?

IMHO if you have to consider eating fido or feefee, then you have failed seriously in your preparations and doing so will only buy you just a little more time.

It was suggested that I may shut down this thread.
I have read through it and figure that it was not so much offensive as rediculous.
I mean really? Your dog being the only food around?
Give me a break!
Every fish in the water gone...every bird in the sky gone...every gopher, skunk, squirrel, etc gone...every edible plant life gone?

I can see it being plausible at least, unlikely but plausible.

SHTF scenario. World War 3. If we hunker down and the animals run away from the action, it may take them awhile to come back. You don't want to be seen outside of whatever home or shack you are hunkered in so you look around and all food supply is gone...wait no its not, theres Fifi in the corner. This is obviously a prolonged deal like Poland or the Balkan's or, well anywhere people go hungry for more than a few days. We are conditioned here to think it will never get that bad and our land will always have a farm grade soil. Deserts are expanding and the earth is changing so this may not be as ridiculous as you may think.

As with many things, the topics intent may not match the subject. Rather run up the flagpole to see who will salute, and who wont.Sort of like a dog wistle being blown.
Not eating my dog ...not even entertaining the thought.....no not going too.

Ridiculous

There are countless scenarios.

For instance, (I'll choose an easy one) Another little rumble in Japan and 4 damaged ready to pop nuclear power plants and a spent fuel rod storage facility could very easily cause global devastation of biblical proportions .... turning the ocean waters, air, rain and food supply in to poison.

Folks need to give their heads a shake after pulling it out of their holes and stop pretending they know it all after watching a few YouTube videos.

The eating pets has happened, is happening now and will happen again in the near future.

Wake up people.

With the above scenario it would be PARTY HEARTY, and then when the symptoms of radiation poisoning got too bad, a bullet to the temple. You'd be dead no matter how well you had prepped. Just sayin'
