A sound approach W's. It will take a long time to make the savings in hydro to pay for the bulbs but besides being the right thing to do if the power is out you will be able to have full lighting with just a small inverter. I have changed all the lighting in our house all to LED. I looked around for deals usually at Costco but now I have a supplier. I have some great prices on a FULL range of LED lighting products. Both 12V and 110V with every socket adapter imaginable in both dimmable and none dimmable varieties from 50W halogen t0 90W halogen equivalent. I am not doing this as a business so if you want anything you can have it at cost just drop me a line.
We are switching over to LED also...it is expensive but hopefully you do it once and your good for 15 years....smelly plugins are expensive I fill a spray bottle with water, add a few drops of tea tree oil and some drops of essential oil (Lavender) and spray it ...it is also healthy whereas most air fresheners are not actually good for you
Insbrooks wrote " it is expensive but hopefully you do it once and your good for 15 years". I am glad you said hopefully. personally I have my doubts i'll tell you in 2026. The LED itself will probably last that long but the 110V lights have a power supply in the base if the bulb. These produce enough heat to require that a heat sink is part of the design of the bulb. Until they run at an almost ambient temperature I think the heat will be the killer of the other components. I have been running some bulbs for two years so far. I have also have bulbs fail, especially some of those purchased on EBay.
CFL bulbs are a scam. Better to use old incandescents in places you rarely use them and LED's when they're on for a long time. We really aren't set up properly for LED's, our 110 house current is way too much for them and they need DC power.
Perfect for your solar setup.

not sure you would know this but if there is a heat issue with the bulb...what about people that have aluminum wiring in their homes?
Also, on a side note do those smelly plug in's use a lot of electricity?
Those are loaded with Carcinogens !!!!
Two alternatives are empty the crap that is in them, flush them out good, fill with an Eco Friendly alternative, from the Health Food Store.
Another better alternative, get some 1/2 pint jars, put in some distilled water (pure water), add in essential oils, add in a wicking/diffuser stick or two, or cinnamon sticks (need more info on that one though, as them about it); (some info here http://tipnut.com/fragrant-home-13-simmering-pot-recipes/ )
a base note
middle note
high note
-> oils, so what are they! Base Note is long lasting, Middle note lasts up to 2 days, High Note lasts a few hours only, add this so the Women, go ... "awwwww that's nice right away. "
Any Real Health Food Store, that is not GNC for example, will be able to help you out or to direct you to a store that can.
No power, also the little bottles will not drip or leak into the electrical outlet cause a fire and burn your house down. (Google that info, you will see! )
Looked up some links from my Biz section in my links folder;

CFL Bulbs although cheaper, have heating issues, never use them in a Pot light or anywhere that is close to flammable material, or fire may start, per my Electrician Buddy.
Contact ICRCC for LED's he will help you out, much cheaper than Canadian Tire or Home Depot
ps.. tried a bunch of combos for "wicking, still can't spell it right!!! arrgggg"

No these are 110v LED bulbs that are coming the replacement for CFL's. You are right CFL's are junk. They do use less power but there is a lot of energy used in their manufacture. Lots more than the old incandescents.

I am not sure what you meant here Oldschool. I was referring to the heat created by the voltage reduction and rectification circuitry in the base of the bulb. This may ultimately shorten the life of the LED units. They draw such little current, much less than convention incandescent and even CFL's that they pose no threat to a house wiring system no matter what the nature of the actual wire is. It is current that heats up wires so less current means less heat.
Canadian Tire have coupons at their lighting displays offering $5.00 off 110V LED light bulbs. They are valid until the end of April. The only problem is that CT's prices are so high even with the coupon it is not a good deal. However it does offer the opportunity for anyone who has never tried LED bulbs to test them out for under $10 in most cases. Just make sure you get the right bulb for the receptacles that you have, the most common being the larger screw in type. Also if you have you lighting on a dimmer system be sure to by a dimmable LED. These are not as common and more costly.
Costco has LED bulbs at reasonable prices. Can't say quality though.
The Costco LED bulbs are pretty decent quality. I have not had any problems with them and I have been using some of theirs since they first carried them.

Thanks for this info. and all your info on them, ICRCC. That helps me out deciding if I want to try them or not.
I have been curious about them but not one to jump right in. 🙂
I will get one to see what I think of them.
I will be glad to get rid of these awful so called light bulbs.
A sense of humor is absolutely essential to survival.
