Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it
You might try the electronics and Sport by owner on Craigslist. Back in the day of 2000 everbody was doing screwdrivers on the freq to get their radios running at peak effeciency. We had approximately 200 people in the Lower Mainland running off CBs and Hams of course as now was then, I was LBJ and I had jumpers working over the 7 hills of the Lower Mainland. We were using the grid as our Antannae. Sometimes I would be deep in the Seymour Mountains in the winter using a cb radio hooked to a small power supply. I would hook a mag mount to the base of a ski lift and presto, I was talking to Jamaica. NO LIE. Theres so many types of antanaes you can build wether directional or base sytems. Meeting on the freq is like networking on the computer. Once you are able to establish a cell of radios and those who would sandy bag to. You were open for business.
I strongly suggest trying the old signallers Antaneas if you live ina wooded area with high trees. Climb up with some copper line and run about fourty feet up the tree then hook across the top of another 38 to fourty foot tree and send the wire back down, wrapping a few times every time you come further down the tree. When you get to the bottom rig a barrel connector for your antannae chord making sure you have a ground spike in the ground or hook to an outside water pipe. You will be running close to a power base station as you are going to get and on a cloudy day...you could hit skip so far you will probably be hitting Tokyo. Im working on an eight wave, solo directional antanae for my cell phone and GMRS when Im out in the woods. So far Ive got my GMRS working beyond its capabilities. The issue now is finding a better way to juice the radio as the further you open, the more juice you need. (simple adjust)
Theres alot you can do for prepping times and you will meet alot of people who come back in times of crisis who have ben sandy bagging for many years. I just bumped into call sign 323 in Vancouver, whos been on the side for close to 12 years. 😀
good to know thanks littlebrown

Hey guys the best all around hand held walki that the morman community and others, like my self have decided on are the
http://www.yaesu.com yaesu yx 7r. With a portable light weight home made antenna or a copper pipe set up. If you get your licence you can even call people on their phones or email people on the other side of the world. It's very facinating how you can bounce a signal using the clouds and repeater stations located all over the world.
Just make sure you study hard and get a high test score = more goodies! Get a car topper antenna and improve you gain{power/range}
Cheers
