well i picked up some seriously discounted preps today!!! a fellow prepper was getting rid of a few things and i thought i could use them. Some of the stuff included first aid supplies, blankets, two wind up flashlights, some candles, and a few other things. Needless to say im very happy with these items!!! this transaction involved no money at all, it was simply, person A needed to get rid of a few things, and person B could use a few things, mutually benifical for both parties.

Has anyone run across fishing kits at the dollar store before? I'm looking for a few hooks and don't want to spend the bucks at the local ripoff shops (AKA hunting/fishing store).

hammer,
If you have a dollarrama in your area check it out, i was just in the dollarama in my area and it had fishing hooks, reels with 7lb line on them, fishing weights, spoons, and plugs. 1.25 a piece i try to buy at least 5 lures or accessories every week

Absolutely...
I have found:

Snelled hooks
Sinker assortments
Hook assortments
2 pack lures
1 pack lures
fishing line
reels
scalers
hook pliers

Probably not the highest quality, but it works. If you get a reel from the dollar store, test it out to make sure it works before you put it in a bug out kit. You can't return a defective one, but at the price, you can afford to replace it before you need to use it.

A neat trick if you don't want to carry a rod...
pack a small roll of electrical tape and a few eyelet screws. With this you can make a rod out of any branch or stick. Screw in the eyelets along the length of the stick, tape the rod to the thick end, and voila!

yep i love the dollar store!!! as far as using a branch goes, if you can find a young alder tree, alder is a hard wood and very durable i think it would make a good fishing pole.

Hi all new here and to prepping. One of the stores I found that carries alot of prepping stuff is Surplus Herbies...Vernon, Kamloops and Williams Lake. They have military surplus stuff and lots of camping, fishing and hunting gear at good prices. For anyone in those areas.

Dear GMurphy, you seem like a person who really cares and because of that I just want to say (in caring), be careful what you rely on in your BUG OUT KIT that comes from a dollar store. Theres a reason those things only cost a Buck or a Buck and a half. Alot of that stuff is what we call in the Industry POST MORTUM or made in Countries where quality control is not the issue of the day. I dont know about you but if the SHTF, do you want to rely on a knife that was made in a place where there is no quality control. For the love of God please check where those tins of over sodium saturated Tuna or Salmon is actually coming from. Not to mention the lead traceable badages and fishing gear which alot of people are using in their survival tins. Saving and being fruggle are good aspects of prepping but remember this...are you actually going to eat it knowing that someone or something has been left in the tin, ie bugs, tin scaelings and the sort. Just a thought. If you need to find brand new rations witha five year shelf life go to MEAL KIT CANADA. You can supplement your family for the cost of a grocery shopping bill and its locally owned and operated right out of DELTA BC. They will give you discounts and even sell MRE heaters to warm up the food. Its the civilian version to the Military MRE. Now for cheap tins of Salmon and tuns (CHINATOWN). For your knife and tool needs goto KNIFEZONE CANADA, the woman who runs it lives in REGINA and will let you use your DEBIT CARD ONLINE with full protection and quick delivery. Usually within three business days. the Buty of it is these rations will fit in a PVC SIX PACK (see PVC TUBING and STOREAGE). You may also find ballistic nylon fighting knives for your kit. Less metal more stealth.

waterbourne, thanks for the input. as much as dollare stores are great i do agree that there are some things that are best left on the shelves of these stores. for the most part the stuff i buy at dollor stores i take home and test first to some degree. but i will check out the names of the companies you mentioned, knifezone canada... never heard of them, thanks!!=)

There are one or two other places that you can, if careful, get some great deals. Second hand stores, MCC in Abby and Mission and Salvation Army come immediatly to my mind. I got a complete Mustang survival suit for $15 at MCC, yes it was used but there is nothing wrong with it and I was greatful I had it this winter when the temp hit -40 C. Also, I have found that some of the small dumps have either a re-use store, at which you can get stuff for next to nothing or a re-use shed that you can get it for free. I have found several items at both. ie: x-cross country skis, tools, small appliances, gardening supplies, campstove (white gas type) coolers, etc. Just goes to show what a wasteful society we have become. My wifes aunt even found a whole lot of wedding presents in her local dump, still wrapped.

Yes we have become the "disposable society" just look at the appliances the we buy. A washing machine use to last over 10 years at the least, now if it makes it past 5 you feel lucky. 😐

My Lovey (that's what I call my wife) and I do the grocery store give away specials every week end. here in Maple Ridge we have 2 Save Ons, 1 Safeway, 1Extra Foods, 1 Great Canadian Stupid Store and a Thrifties all of them vying for our buisness, So almost every weekend they have specials. last week end Zellers had Campbells soups 4 kinds on sale for $0.56 a can. Save on had canned beens 3 styles $7.00 a dozen.
Walmart and I'm "NOT A FAN" had Herford Corned beef on sale $1.00 a can.
The rouet I'm taking is buy when on sale and use it and replace what youm use so you always have lots of extra.
When Canadian Tire has a sale on LP tanks buy one fill it put it aside, it pisses My Lovey off once and a while when she finds 48 green LP canisters in my shed.but we lost power last year for a day, had athe LP heater going, two lamps and the three burner camp stove going too.
She brought home six canisters home last week (they where on sale and she thought I might want some)
Enough now 🙂
