Hi mamabearof5 🙂
I'm in the Fraser Valley too, and very much into canning. I was never taught how to do it, so I'm learning everything as I go. I've been busy this week especially, putting up a lot of pickles from my garden, and some applesauce today from an apple glean I just participated in. I love canning, I just don't love heating up my house in the summer :/ A summer kitchen is definitely on my to-do list. I'm hoping to get a pressure canner sometime soon. I've seen the Tattler lids and think those would be great to have stocked up. I get a lot of canning jars for free off of Craigslist, or I buy them at Value Village or other thrift stores. You can never have too many canning jars.
Another girl after my own heart! I too have plans for a summer kitchen. I am slowly collecting all the equipment and storing it away until we get to the actual renovation part. Tomato sauce and apples in different forms are on my list this week.
Hi, BCPrepGirl, glad to see another like myself. I grew up my whole life "helping" with canning, but don't remember much as I was young and it was boring. So now I am teaching myself how to can and trying to remember what I was taught. I can hardly wait to get my hands on a pressure canner and really dive into canning.
Anitapreciouspearl, I completely hear you on the not likely to heat your house in summer. Boy, I just about melted a few times doing some canning. As a child we would can outside on a homemade grill with rocks for the base and an old oven rack, slip the end of the tiger torch into the centre of rocks light it and set the water canner on top. All of us kids (9) in total had to help with the prep of the fruits or veggies.
