Marigolds do work for helping keep flies away, I have never seen them have any effect on mosquitos though, I do plant Marigolds under my windows and box's of them around my doorways to help keep the flies down, I also pick and dry the marigolds flowers for adding a sprinckle of them into the chicken's feeds in winter will help keep your yolks a nice dark color (still not summer color but much better then without) plus I have noticed that the hens seems to molt faster if they have a mix of dried clover, nettles and marigolds on their food then if they don't.. much faster turn around and back to laying.

anyone have any good original recipes, native recipes for bug repellent?
- I had heard of using certain types of smelly plants, crush up and rub on skin
Applying coconut oil to your exposed skin, noxema works for the face also, some people say if you carry dryer sheet in your pocket it helps but I never found that to be true, they are attracted to sweat also so using coconut oil as a deoderant helps.
I will be keeping Wasp and Hornet spray in my vehicle from now on as well. Use against flying pests and is a good substitute for pepper spray as well. In another online forum or such, someone sprayed pepper spray into the eyes of some dogs that were attacking, it did not work at all!
To control moquitos around my area, they have been applying garlic in a fog form. Smells like an ethnic area afterwards.

Might just come and visit then, Love Garlic!
