A while ago, I received this email from one site that I subscribe to for solar flare warnings...

Space Weather Message Code: WARK07
Serial Number: 38
Issue Time: 2012 Aug 27 1443 UTC

WARNING: Geomagnetic K-index of 7 or greater expected
Valid From: 2012 Aug 27 1443 UTC
Valid To: 2012 Aug 27 1500 UTC
Warning Condition: Onset
NOAA Scale: G3 or greater - Strong to Extreme

Then I got this one a few minutes later...

Space Weather Message Code: WARK07
Serial Number: 39
Issue Time: 2012 Aug 27 1445 UTC

CANCEL WARNING: Geomagnetic K-index of 7 or greater expected
Cancel Serial Number: 38
Original Issue Time: 2012 Aug 27 1443 UTC

Comment: DISREGARD - SYSTEM TESTING ONLY

One would think that they could have put the test part at the begining of the first email...

Hi Denob: What're the chances of you posting a link to that site? I've looked for a decent site for solar warnings for awhile and can't seem to find one I like.

What does all this mean. Seriously, I have no clue how to read or interpret the data for solar activity. Is there a chart or something that would tell me what the strengths would do or not do for us?

Here is an explanation of the scales used by the NOAA.

Denob,

Were a legitimate warning to come through the swpc site, is there anyone paying attention who would warn the "public at large"? How quickly would word get out on these boards?

Ansty you raise a good question. There are members that regularly check SW, receive emails or their text messages. I am sure that if they received a warning they would post it on this board. However unless you happen to be checking the board at the time it would not do you much good. So that is not a very good early warning system at all. One solution would be to subscribe to these services yourself.

I am aware that other prepper groups in other countries have set up early warning systems. On system consisted into dividing the country into districts. Each district has a coordinator. If an event happens or is about to happen members inform the coordinator by text message who then disseminates the text message to all those preppers who have willingly given their mobile numbers to be part of the system. Only the coordinator is in possession of the individual members phone numbers.

Another system uses twitter and gets the alerts out that way. Again individual members have to willingly participate. Perhaps we should consider something like this for a Canada wide alert system. Either way a mobile phone would seem to be the only way to ensure mass awareness in a timely fashion. I can think of many scenarios in which such a system would give preppers a heads up before the general public would even become aware that there was a problem. Let's see what everyone thinks.
