5 Steps To Check For Possible Water Damage
Step 1: Check all the pipes, seals, faucets and fittings in your home. First, look for any drips or pools of water. Also, check for musty smells under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. All of these issues tend to point to possible water damage. They may not seam like a big deal, but you still should get them fixed before the problem gets worse.
Step 2: Check behind your washing machine and under all the sinks in your home. Look for dry, cracked hoses that are no longer flexible. They should be replaced because they are most likely to break and start leaking large amounts of water.
Step 3: Check the overflow pans on your air conditioner and even your refrigerator. They should be draining properly. If they are not, this could be a potential water damage hazard and should be taken care of.
Step 4: Check your roof. Walk around on your roof and look for discoloration in the shingles or soft spots. You should also check in your attic if you have one.
Step 5: Check the walls, ceiling, carpets and hardwood floors. Look for any slight discoloration. If you see anything, this could indicate a slow leak problem. It may not be damp in that area, but the discoloration is your first clue and should be taken care of. This will prevent further water damage.
