Picked up a bag to try. Does anyone here have experience with or recipes using hardtack. My sole experience was years ago in NFLD with fish and brewis.

Someone brought some homemade hard tack to a meet up. I have not made it myself. After watching one of Townsends' video on hardtack, I couldn't help but think if more water was added you would have the modelling clay I used as a kid.

I think that it could be used as a thickener for soups, stews, crushed with items added for a fake bread pudding (if there was not too much salt). I know for me to eat it, I had to soak it in soup broth first.

Each biscuit contains 400mg of sodium. Below is the nutritional label.

Pilot bread does have it's advantages compared to hardtack. Local availability or inexpensive online cost are not two of them. While similar, it feels like comparing apples to oranges. Salt levels seem to be a bit lower. Will explore a few Newf stores to see what they may have. I think having both hardtack and pilot may be the best course.

yes and no to comparing:
both last a long time
neither have much in the way of nutrients
about the same cost

a lot more salt in hardtack
hardtack requires less in the way of care of storage
pilot bread has a lot of chemicals (the store bought kind)
