Evenin' All,

Thanks Prom for letting me know about the documentry; Alone in the Wilderness.

I had not seen this film before and am very happy to have invested the time to watch it. It is about a chap who gets dropped off in Alaska to build a cabin from scratch and live there for a year.

This fellow is no greenhorn. He is an expert with an axe, boring bit, chisel, and saw. He built his cabin solo in less than 60 days. And this is not a shack, but a hand crafted cabin. If you watch the show you will know what I mean.

Craftsman and mountainman. Self-sufficeint of the highest degree. Oh, I forgot to mention this story takes place in 1967/1968. I will let you find out the ending, very impressive.

Mountainman.

I have seen that particular documentary a few times now and am always amazed at how he was able to build such a wonderful cabin all by himself.
It just shows that where there’s a will, there is a way. As an added bonus for us “modern” folks, there are more manuals to help us than you can shake a stick at...if you are into shaking sticks.

It's been years since I last saw this program, but I remember it well and was also amazed at the accomplishments. Not to forget however, that he used an existing cabin while he built his. Lucky for him as I believe that snow was starting to fall while he was still putting on the roof and building the fireplace.

Denob,

Good observation about the cabin he stayed in during construction. However, that cabin was some miles away. He still had to walk to work each and every day. He did show what was and is possible if you have the will.

The quality of his work is very impressive. Not a power tool in sight.

You're very welcome mountainman. That's why we're here, to learn, share knowledge and ideas. And when you share you're getting something back. I got your excellent book, and also learned about the existence of One Man's Wilderness book, so thank you all.
