Well said Perfesser.
Perfesser,
Thank You for your post 🙂
Your MP's reply:
Let me be very clear: the police will not be able to read emails or view web activity unless they obtain a warrant issued by a judge
Is what I was hoping for in this bill. I was told repeatedly by others then in my own reading it seemed clear that the authorities could nose through your online actvities at their discretion, making this bill a horrible invasion of privacy. However, "IF" Judicial Warrent is required before the Authorities or various agencies can access this information, then most of my concerns around this bill are alieved and I will have no further objection to it.
But the big question: Can we trust politicians to tell us the truth? Sadly, NO

They keep going in the direction they're headed and they won't even be able to say that to each other.
What's happening down there is pretty scary and starting to spin out of control. The worst part is that what happens there usually happens here sooner or later.

hhmmmmmm.............
Bill C-51 is a very bad deal for Canadians. The amount child molesters, terrorists, and generally evil people are quite small, and can be tracked quite easily by associations. If the Law Enforcement Agencies need an easier way to get search warrants, then so be it, but not at the expense of 40 some million Canadian's privacy. The idea that your email, web traffic, and personal documents can be opened at anytime without a search warrant or any accountability make us a police state. Our personal emails are only one generation past the postal service of Canada Post, and its no different than someone opening your mail sitting in your mailbox. Any bills, purchases, letters from freinds, your employers, family, your children or your spouse can be read.
I keep hearing some lame reasoning that if you have nothing to hide, then why is this a problem? If I have nothing to hide, should I reveal what in my wallet? my bank account? perhaps they need to know what is in my safety deposit box if I am not a criminal and have nothing to hide. What do you keep in your garage? whats in the box at eh back of your basement? We want your DNA sample, after all, you have nothing to hide right?
(sarcasm off now)
Its just a very bad law that opens the door for corruption, poor law enforcement, and major breaches of privacy. If laws like this get passed, any reason to invade your privacy become a legitimate one. If they cannot get a search warrant, then back off. This is a free country, lets keep it this way.
if they really want to stem the amount of freaks out there up the goddamn punishment!!
bring back the noose and well see who wants to take their chances with child pornography etc.
While agree with you, capital punishment doesn't stop offenders of this nature, but it does stop re-offenders.
Point is, Bill C-51 is a bad law. Preparing for disaster is only one step away from making one, in some people's eyes. They could be looking in your mailbox because you are one step away from being a terrorist. If you've had a very personal letter from your wife, girlfriend or significant other, its just been read and shown to his buddy. They didn't need a warrant to do so, nor does this new law violate any of your rights or your privacy.
So much of this stuff gets through because they know the public doesn't pay attention. They don't much care about your privacy or rights. They do care about getting re-elected. Mail your MP and let em know you ARE watching.
