I am not recommending using frozen milk as a part of your LTS however I have been able to get a LOT of FREE milk this week and need to know the results of freezing it for a few weeks. It will eventually be made into yogurt. Can I freeze directly in the "paper" carton? Should I put it in something else - canning jars for instance? ...if you read my blog that should make you laugh! - I must seem obsessed at the moment with canning jars.

Anyway - stories good or bad?

Since I'm on the subject of milk - how are you storing your supply?

I've ordered some powdered milk from Thrive (hasn't arrived quite yet) but I am wondering if anyone has mylar and O2'd any? We really don't DRINK milk but I need powdered milk to make the bread we really like - I'm sure we could do without it if we had too.

DO NOT PUT THEM IN JARS 😯 not unless you want a dangerous frozen mess in your freezer. The glass will shatter when the liquid freezes and expands. If you want to freeze it, then put in plastic freezer bags and leave 1/5 area of air for expansion.

I hadn't inteneded to fill them to the top - I can see your horified expresssion 🙂 I am not a fan of plastic for many reasons but perhaps the freezer bags are ok since it will be short term. good idea! thanks 🙂

I do tend to freeze the milk in plastic but I have used glass jars in a pinch, no more then 2/3rds full and yes, you have to be careful of them in the freezer, I freeze milk for alot longer then a few weeks, thaw it out in the fridge, and then shake it like heck for baking etc If you want to drink it, I like to whip it a bit to really blend it back together.

I am trying to figure out if I have ever made yogurt from the frozen milk, I must have but most likely mixed it with fresh as well.. Plus it would not have been cow's milk, its always goat or sheep, don't know if that makes a difference in anyway or not..

We used to freeze them in bags but found we didn't like the taste for drinking unless we added a bit of powdered milk with it as well.

The reason for 😯 is my mum tried this in glass jar, it broke and I end up with a nasty gash on my hand trying to get it out. 😥

yup - free milk. DH has been a trooper stopping at different stores on his way to meetings today. Freezing them in the cartons - that's what DH did when he took a boys club camping many years ago - they bulge but he didn't remember any exploding. Big bowl - in fridge - got it! Thanks for all the input!

One of my friends has been to Zehrs/Loblaws every day this week. They had a limit of 4 in SO so she went to the 2 stores in her town and bought (for free) 8 each day and has frozen them. I have started to make her a prepper and upcycler! 🙂
I freeze milk all the time, never had a problem (just remember to give it a GOOD shake before using) I freeze cartons, bags, homemade almond and rice milks. I freeze the almond meal when I make almond milk for using in cakes, puddings and cookies 🙂 Nothing goes to waste if I can help it!

I won't tell you how many we scored but we'll be good for yogurt for a good while!

My wife and I have dairy goats and we freeze milk to get us through the winter months when we are not milking. We get our family and friends to save their one litre milk bags - wash them out really well, cut the tops off, fill them and zip tie them shut. We probably freeze close to a hundred litres...... occasionally we get one that seperates a bit when thawing (then we give it to the chickens). You might also check out canning milk. There is a number of videos on youtube.
