Trying to get together a good medical kit. Found I could not buy things like erythromycin, antibiotic ear drops, lidocaine, etc without a prescription. I do not need or want a doctor, I know what I need. And I do not want to go the doggie or fish meds route. How are your getting your med kit together when it is unlawful to do so here in Canada ?

Maxiem,

Polysporin ear/eye drops can be bought over the counter. It works for ear infections and pink eye thouh it burns like heck in the eyes compared to thombromycin drops.

There really are no ways to get antibiotics over the counter here in Canada. The only solution would be to talk to a doctor/nurse practitioner that is willing to help out and write you a prescription for storage. Don't expect to leave their office with a shopping list like prescription though as it may be perceived as unethical to allow someone to self medicate.

If you're willing to do some research and create a good alibi, you could approach them saying that you are preparing for a rowing trip across the Pacific or a master's degree research I northern Yukon flora and will live remotely for a year. That could likely justify them giving you a script for a variety of ailments with the instructions on how and when best to use them.

Some doctors will write Rx for tetracycline and NEOsporin ( neosporin works gram negative bacteria )
if you tell them you are going hiking etc, for a long 2 month journey
You might be able to get some sulpha drugs too,
but many may not give anything that is penicillin base or associated.

And they are not likely to write an Rx for any large quantity.

You should get both neosporin ( need Rx ) and polysporin ( OTC over the counter ).

Get any Rx for neosporin with repeats, as this stuff expires. Not sure if doctor will put a repeat
on tetracycline .

Silver colloidal is a good item but hard to find . I bought some intended for dogs.

Betadine Scrub is good item buy OTC ( over the counter )
You might want Dettol also
Hydrogen Peroxide and rubbing alcohol

Calamine lotion for poisin ivy.

You can buy a milder Cortisone 0.5% cream product OTC

Both 222 ( aspirin based ) and tylenol #1 ( acetaminophen based )
plus your usual Advil and similar drugs.

Robaxacet can be very useful to have.

You may just have to live with alot of OTC items
Such as: Benadryl, Gravol ( dimenhydrate ), spend some time looking to see what useful
items you can buy OTC

I too do not like using doctors. I have one and use her very very seldom. The main reason I ever go is to have something diagnosed if I am not certain of what it is, and since we don't get sick very often, we hardly ever see her. However, last year I was given a prescription for a skin infection. She knew I preferred to fight it naturally, but gave it to me just in case. I filled it, vacuum sealed it, and it's now in my freezer, along with the instructions for use. From now on, whenever we have something for which I think we might be given a prescription for antibiotics, I'll get it and fill it and store it away. Other than that, it's OTC for us.

How come we had all those diet pills labelled as "speed" in the 70's and 80's when no one was fat...and now when everyone is fat, there are no more diet pills left? 😆

(PS: I know your gonna say they are bad for you, but so is obesity...) 😯

I remember my grandma telling me about taking those...she said she had so much energy...vacuuming the house at midnight etc...then later they called them speed and the clean house era ended. lol

I am curious if this is a cream or pills that you put in freezer ? I would think that creams would separate and go weird once frozen.
Or perhaps they gave you prednisone tablets ?

Goldie, it was just a regular old prescription for oral antibiotics. Not a cream or anything topical. So the pills went in the freezer.

One of the reasons that antibiotics are controlled is that they are easily misused. This is one of the reasons we have 'Superbugs" that are resistant to most antibiotics. The first thing to do if you have a chronic problem is to discover why you are susceptible to a certain type of infection. Are you a smoker? Poor personal hygiene habits. Do you expose yourself to carriers or infected people through your work? Is there something you can do through diet or supplements to improve your immune system. Antibiotics should be a last resort and you need to know HOW to use them. Also tetracycline can become toxic if it is long past it's expiration date.

My original question was: How are your getting your med kit together when it is unlawful to do so here in Canada ?

My question has not been answered.

But I am somewhat disappointed in all the posts here that claim you are so worldly wise in all things medical related, and most of you agree that medications can be abused therefore you agree with current Government Employees that legislate we are not to have access to those medications because we are not worldly wise like you are.

All of you without exception are here on this site because you abhor Government intervention in your own life, Government telling you that you cannot do this and cannot do that.
Yet you agree that current Government intervention for the rest of us is what is required. One rule for you, another rule for the rest of us.

Hypocrites in the extreme, and none of you comprehend that YOU are part of the problem.

Think about it.

Whoa, friend, slow down a bit!
Not everyone is here because of a hatred for government.
Try to keep in mind that this is the same government that tells us it is not lawful to murder, steal, assault.
You paint us like teenagers who rebel against our parents simply because they are our parents.
Just because the government is over reaching on many issues doesn't mean that every law is bad just because it's a law!
I'm sure there are ways to get prescription meds, and I'm also sure that some here have figured out how to do so, but may not be willing to discuss it in an open and public forum!

Ok, I'll be less wordy and offer a tangible solution : go - to - Mexico. 3 words... The farmacias will sell you just about anything less narcotics. Just be prepared to explain your ear, belly, skin and lung infections to the CBSA agent if your bags are searched.
