We use to have a small trout pond/dugout on our Granpa's acerage growing up and it was awesome! You do have to research and make sure that if you want the fish to survive/thrive over the winter that you make sure the dugout is deep enough and I also remeber needing to cycle the water, but there are pumps etc out there that I think you can buy and run via solar. Great idea, just make sure it lasts, cause that would suck to count on the fish and find them all winter killed.

A trout pond would be great however I have bed rock fairly close to the surface around my retreat so I am not sure that I would be able to a dig large enough pond and get below the frost line at the same time. Most of my areas with deeper soil are being used for the gardens.

I am going to get going on a trout barrel and see how it goes.

A 150 gal. Rubbermaid "cattle water trough" from the Co-op would work. I overwinter my pondfish (one Koi 16", other 10 goldfish 8"+, plus 'babies') in one every winter because my pond freezes (<24").....pumped with a 150 gph pump/filter bought years ago....keep it in my coldroom/root cellar.....with a light on a timer. BTW, I get other 'river fish' minnows in my pond during the summer - I suspect via the bullfrogs with eggs attached...??

My hubby had a pond for a few years, but then our granddaughter came along and we decided to do away with it until she was older.

In the meantime we have nice big pond comets in a blue water barrel in the summer. If conditions are warm enough, they spawn. Then we had to get out more tanks in the basement for overwintering. Now that the little one is 6 we are talking about doing the pond again.

Tilapia is a fast growing and breeding fish and you could buy your starters at a pet store. Nice and legal, no laws. They are what the guy in Arizona is raising. Tilapia is a nice mild fish to eat, but 365 days a year sounds a bit.... boring to me. lol
