I got my Gamma Lids from Amazon.ca today and I'm heading out to the TSC store tomorrow to look at buckets and other prep/canning things.
Just cruising the Canadian Tire online catalog to compare prices on 1.9L canning jars/supplies and low and behold....
THEY STOCK TATTLER LIDS AND RINGS NOW!!!!

I hear from others in the USA that they're fussy to work with compared to two piece metal lids, but for less than $15 bucks investment/free if I use CT money, I'll give them a try.

This is great news, thanks!

I picked up 2 boxes (of 12) today, they were not on the shelf so I asked them to bring it down from the warehouse. So if you don't see it at your local CT but the website stays they have inventory then just ask, it takes a while to make space for new items.

At Lehman's in the USA they are 24 for $18 something so 12 for $9.99 is equal to that with no shipping charges. Thanks!

Gamma lids are still too pricey on Amazon.ca for my $2 poor man's rubbermaid buckets.

Here is some info of Tattler vs traditional metal lids: http://www.commonsensehome.com/comparison-of-jarden-and-tattler-lids/

When I decided to buy some Tattler I had no actual experience with them or any other lids. All I knew is that I often got metal lids for a $1 per doz at end of the season clear out and regularly get Canadian brand lids at $1.25 at Dollarama. So that is about .12 cents each. You have to use a Tattler lid about 8 times then they pay for themselves. The rings however cost about $3 a doz while metal lids are $1.25 (More like $2 at grocery stores) so put that into your calculations.

Canning is not a big thing for me because I don't grow my own food, but something I'd like to do just for the skill.

I used a couple of lids yesterday...one failed, one stuck.
But I also had a metal lid fail...and I know both lids failed because I was a little to enthusiastic .
I tightened down the Tattler's lids immediately out of the pressure cooker (as per the website's instructions) and I could see they had sealed but... after a while I just couldn't resist and when they were half cooled and I tapped lids way too early to check the seals and lost one of each type of lid.
No worries, that chicken just went into the freezer for casseroles.
First time in all these years I've had a metal lid fail.
