I know that dedicated weather radios are popular in the US -- but I've never seen one in any home in Canada.

We live in SW Manitoba, and so far this year, have had several storms develop into REALLY BAD SITUATIONS. We do not have television cable or satellite, our internet goes down in a stiff breeze, and cel coverage is spotty here. Does anyone know whether or not a weather radio would be worth the investment, and if so, what brand/kind/model? I know that the storm warning system in Canada isn't very good, but I would like to have something to give us fair warning, as all indications are that the storms are going to continue.

Years ago I got a CC radio from C.Crane.
Built for the best reception. Weather Alerts and this model can listen in to the HAM band
Not cheap but ......

I have an ETON...just like this one, only I bought mine at The Source.

Programable, SAME encoded, so you don't get woken up for a warning 3 counties away...good radio.

My best radio is a GE Super Radio http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/5301 I paid $90 back in 2000 or so and it seems I overpaid compared to many. It doesn't have any Ham capabilities but is quite clear and strong compared to most radios of today. I like the external antenna connection because if I use it I can pick up WLS in Chicago when I live 1,200 miles north of Toronto. I wish it had a crank or USB like Denob's but mine isn't even digital. It does run on 6 D cell batteries and I could maybe even knock a bear out with it if I swung hard enough cause it likely weighs 6 times more then the others listed here. 🙄

I have the same radio as Denob and I agree that it is a good one. What stands out for me is the capability to charge via crank, solar, usb. This is an upgrade over an older battery-only operated radio I had for years.
