Kumbaya...
The government IS mankind. At least it aspires to be so. In fairness, it agrees to compensate landholders for the fair market value for lands it requires. We have to pay for the land we occupy for many reasons. The most important reason that I can think of is so that the landholder will assign VALUE to that very land. When something comes to us without cost, we don't seem to appreciate it as much. (That's why it is so important to recognize Remembrance Day)
For the record, I'm with Scrounger; Lortie was a piece of shit and not worthy of the Cpl. moniker.
Needs must when the devil drives.

Ok, will try to be the devil's (errrr, military's) advocate here.
So, like us, the government tries to prepare for unforeseen events, one of them being terrorism, CBRNE events, plane hijacking, etc. for those, they rely on the Special Forces Command. In the spirit of fast response, it makes sense to locate these emergency resources close to where they can get an air lift. Canada has already done that with its disaster relief kits after all. Those black pyjama clad ninjas need a bit of real estate and the base doesn't have room, so, for the benefit of many, one's land is sacrificed in exchange for a financial compensation.
Lets just be careful here and not set ourselves in the dilemma of wanting a cake and wanting to eat it.
Again..... I feel for Mr Meyer, but I'm rather convinced that he is being fairly compensated. I also think that the left leaning medias sure like to play the card of demonizing the army for robbing the land of this poor 85 year old man...
Oh... And really? Lortie??? I'm somewhat saddened that someone would bring that guy as a point of comparison to this story.
As Canadians we don't "own" land in the first place. The Crown Owns the land, and we purchase the right to live, and enrich what we live on.
This is making headlines, but it isn't the only case of a government appropriating land. It is legal, and because the Crown actually owns the land, and the government is the agent of the Crown, they can do it. Canada is only a handful of countries within HM Elizabeth's realms that still does this. Why we havn't changed...i dunno.
But with the LRT expansion in Region of Waterloo, or various highway expansions, etc. the governments will first attempt to purchase your land for a wildly great amount of money so that you would never say no. If however, someone does....they simply commence the legal means to appropriate it. Municipalities have no constitutional rights and have to go through the Provincial government. But both the Crown in Right of Ontario or any other province, or the Crown in Right of Canada can reclaim the land HM has been so gracious to allow you to settle on. 🙂 This isn't a slag on the monarchy btw...in fact I'm a proud supporter of the Monarchy and card carrying member of the Monarchist League of Canada...but....this is a government action using its priviliege under Crown authority to "get what it wants." Every government since before confederation has done it...and I don't see it stopping any time soon.
Does it suck...yes. Is it legal and the convention...yup. Does the farmer stand a chance of getting his land back.....unfortunately...nope. Not a sliver.

Its ok to wane philosophical..until they come for your land. 🙂 I hear what your saying. And I'm actually impressed the Gov't of Canada has over the last 10 years or so sunk a lot of money into expanding this part of the Canadian Forces for a number of reasons....but the fact remains that the government can expropriate land. They try and be polite about it...but at the end of the day...the government...which is supposed to be for citizens will quite easily relocate you for "the greater good." Sounds like something from the USSR....
"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force."

I think we are a long way in comparison of when most military bases were first built. Talk about a lot of farmers expropriated! Places like Gagetown (NB) and Wainwright (AB) have their maps dotted with the names of former communities and even still have some cemeteries still intact as reminders of the old days.
Yes, I would be PO'd if I was approached to first, politely, sell my land or later have it seized, but I don't think the government is about to go start taking large swaths of lands from people just on a whim anytime soon.
