Looks like Alberta will be getting a carbon tax...They say it will be on electricity , natural gas and gas. I don't care about the first two but they say on gas it could be 6.5 cents a litre, the previous government had just put on a gas tax...this is getting painful.
If anyone is looking for a further incentive on alternative heating and power options this could be it...once they establish this I only see it going up....Also this is a compounding tax, these energy sources are used by the cities, counties, municipalities, towns where we all live, this drives up operating costs for arenas, for snow plowing, school buses, for garbage removal...thus property taxes will have to rise in step.... 🙁

There is another option...start looking at elected officials who stop increasing taxes.

When you look at the % of taxation of one's personal wealth over that last 60 years...its stunning what has occurred....little by little, very small increments...and you dont realize how much is actually taken now....

This tax wont reduce consumption, I know people with huge 4000 square foot homes in the country, lighting throughout their yards and down the drive ways, burning 1000 watts, maybe 2 just for ornamental lighting, they can afford it and wont care, wont actually cut back.
then there are those who just getting by, they cant afford to renovate, or make substantive changes, they will have to just pay the increased costs, either way in the end this tax wont really amount to less energy use.

A carbon tax isn't really meant to reduce consumption .It will do that indirectly by increased costs.

A carbon tax is only meant to pick the pockets of consumers so that the government has money to pass on to their pet causes and cronies.

Agreed, I don't see what a carbon tax will do, except cost the tax payer more for the same thing.

Well the idea that we decieded our tax rate by who we elect is a interesting thought, the further from the voting base the more nebulous such control is. I can only say that looks to be truest at maybe the town level, likely still so at the county level, by the time we get to provincial level, I would have to say what province are we talking about, and then at the federal level I would say no..not saying it was always so, just my thoughts on the current state of politics....the power of recall, the removal of corporate campaign donations, and just because I think it would be a good idea, and if they are supposed to be representative of the people who elect them, A simple means test at the federal level, if their net worth is more than 4x that of the average Canadian, then the position (PM) should come with no pension benefits for the first 5 years, only if they get elected to a second term, lets motivate them to do a good job.
I didn't vote for that last gas tax the conservatives (provincial) gave us, and I didn't vote for this gas tax the ndp (provincial)gave us. I have yet to meet anyone tell me that they did, and I expect more taxes from the liberals (federal) and I assure you I wont have voted for that either.
Just who is voting for these things? and could they please stop it!!

I agree 60 years of voting and electing members from every party has increased costs, be that through taxes, user fees, or other back door means...I think I see a direct correlation
