Anyone else have a problem keeping your mouth shut when all you want to say is "I told you so" or "well if you had listened to me, this wouldn't be happening"?

I had to walk away when my step daughter was whining about frozen pipes, no water, short of food, etc. After years and years of trying to teach her, I am finally giving up but dern it is a hard thing to do when you have grandkids.

Only problem I have had is people wanting me to keep my mouth shut.

Welcome to the club!
Seriously, it’s a big issue for anyone wishing to either prep or help others. I know I am speaking to the converted but it is a potentially bigger issue then we may appreciate.

Average citizens, corporations and governments, do not like hearing the truth and go to great lengths to shut down the truth. We all know this, yet many of us, push on and as a direct or indirect result makes our community look like a pile of fruitcakes.

When in a social environment and a relevant Segway pops up, I try and raise the topic of little things like oldschool mentioned about frozen lines.. I think one way to try and get people to believe in prepping is to make it personal. Maybe mention your grandfather telling you a trick about letting water run during cold snap and many other seemingly benign and not so much of a not it all approach. We may be 100% correct but people feel insecure and don’t want to feel like they don’t know things. Human element!

In corporate or gov security, one trick to get people to keep their desk clear of sensitive information is to focus on the employees keeping their purse or personal phone secure. Once they start to see it as a personal issue, they start to take the professional side more seriously. All manner of tricks to raise security awareness and perhaps we need to try and do the same with family and friends.

Some recent events like tornado in ottawa are getting a few more hits from friends and talk about a few extra supplies is popping up, but it’s still an uphill climb in helping people see the obvious. Most frustrating personal issue is a good friend of mine. He refuses to take it seriously and because I know he is smart and a very close friend, it drives me up the wall.

At the end of the day, all we can do is try new methods of tweaking people, sadly, take advantage of a disaster and use as a Segway into being better prepared and continue to stay strong in our beliefs.

Governments are useless because they do not want people asking why do they recommend a week, month or months of supplies. They speak the truth and then they become afraid of people asking why “they” are not doing more to protect people. Famous quote from a few good men “ you can’t handle the truth” is a very appropriate way of thinking about most things in life.

Then you have corporations not wanting to spend money on making their systems more resilient/ cell towers going down during tornado because of no backup power. On and on one can go with examples. So between corporations, gov and lazy people, we are where we are.

Speaking of lazy, I have to get my but in gear and get a better garden going this spring! Pitter patter, get at her

Enjoy the weekend.

Its easy to wag the finger and say "I told you so." And we are all guilty of it. That being said, most people arn't stupid and know when they've messed up. Reminding them of it just puts up defenses and aside from self satisfaction at being right..does little to help correct the issue.

My recommendation..keep it positive. Dont' wag the finger, but use it as an opportunity to help when they need it most. Actions and support and explaining it that way will encourage them more to change those habits then hitting them up with the opposite.

My two cents. And I've done my share of wagging the finger too. Hence I know it does little to fix an issue.

here is a link that may convince those who hate the "right" and all those wacko gun owners and preppers with their bags of beans, bullets and bunkers. keep looking for average media posts so you know what to drop on people when your in a social environment and they don't know how crazy you/we all are. pretend to be naive , shocked and ever so bewildered. heck, blame it on Trump. people will really pay attention then.

https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2019/01/31/msnbcs-maddow-what-would-you-your-family-do-if-russia-killed-the-u-s-power-grid-during-the-polar-vortex/

the above or others you find should help given their angst and what appears to be an almost sexual fervor over Russia. They tend to think of china as nice rice growing farmer type folks but we can let them believe that for now. the important take away for them is that this is an accurate assessment( I think it is anyways 😯 ) and that a nation like the evil empire or one of its many, many proxies could easily accomplish this. Probably best to not mention the Jihad nut bars or any other culture because then one is called a racist and people go all snaky, so lets keep it evil white dudes and nice and simple for the PC crowd.

just tell them that this is "scary and like you know, wow this isn't cool at all and people and their cats could suffer." 😳 Start them off on this simple example and drop the hint that "you were thinking of getting some extra food in case and a few spare batteries" then they look at you and think that maybe they should get a weeks worth of Kraft dinner and some cat food in as well. Next time you see them, you can inquire how they made out with the extra cat food and tell them about the other main stream media thing you just heard and in hushed words, tell them your thinking of getting a camping stove and some small propane tanks and that you are really getting them for camping but they can be handy just in case!

Its a lie and a con but what the heck, if it becomes a win win, who cares

getting warmer here in Ottawa area, maybe its the gas bags on the hill, climate change or the evil Orange one. either way, great sledding weather.

Cheers

You think using breitbart as a reference is a smart move? And inviting American style divide tactics like mainstream media is going to help?

Heres the thing ands it’s pretty obvious to those who can take their sources warts and all and don’t lose their mind over where the info comes from. No danger with you, me and others on this board, we can handle the initial source /MSNBC.

Is msnbc the actual source that discusses the risk from Russia and China ? Answer is yes.

I didn’t think I needed to remove the initial link from Breitbart for internal discussions, but maybe I should have spent the time to find the original clip from mainstream msnbc. I didn’t think I needed to go that far so apologize.

I know that many people lose their mind if you ever mention a non PC source. No one can mention classified sources so one is sadly stuck with public stuff. So when we see a good piece of information come out from msnbc, RT or.... we should use it.

Our attempts to broach the subject of prepping to average citizen, appears to often fall on deaf ears, so we need to change tactics.

As to a nation divided, I will give the yanks credit for their fervency of convictions. Messy but so is freedom or at least the pursuit of same. In canada, we certainly have the politics of division being played all the time.

So in closing. If we use mundane mainstream video... to reach across the divide to joe Q citizen and have a light turn on, I think it may help. But yes, one must remove scary secondary links to evil Breitbart and others. Just bland pablum must be fed to the public at large. Anything else may scare them from our honest and high efforts to help people be better prepared.

lol I am sure how this got to this point

I was just annoyed about the whining on things that could have been prevented. After 25 years or so in her life I just get upset when I see her turned into a sheep. She knows prepping. She has helped me prep. She has skills.

However, she is slowly turning away from all of things she has learned. She is starting to believe the mass media that all is ok, that there is no reason to worry.

Heck a few days of really cold weather in southern Ontario and gas stations have already been running out of fuel.

thecrownsown; yep I agree that is why I walked away and posted here. To see how others handle it.

It’s shame, I think many are drinking the koolaid/ don’t worry be happy....
In the end, it’s their choice. Hate to see loved ones or good people fall victim but so mote it be.

Have to say my biggest frustration is knowing all these people will and are wanting my stuff.
Why I pray it turns minus 40 and snows 6 inches every day for a month. That would likely wipe out the majority so less creeping around in my yard

Knowing that won’t likely happen, one can hope we do help others. I pretty much don’t mention anything unless they broach the subject. To tired.

I think preparing minded people are for the most part already self inclined. Either through evolving or being schooled so to speak. I myself have stayed away from the trying to school part. I realize that when it comes to family it may be difficult and in turn I would help them out anyway so there’s that. But making others aware I really don’t try anymore, that’s why I’m back here, to meet like minded individuals
