I have done a search on the board about window film. I did check out Apex window as someone mentioned. I still have a question and I am hoping someone can answer them for me.
What the heck am I looking for? 😕
I just want to keep people from looking in my front window but still allow my cats to look out. Uline has a product but at over $300.00 a roll there is no way in hell I can afford that. One of my neighbors suggested just using dark tinting used for cars.
I have used the frosted window tinting on bathroom windows but you can't see through it.
I have used car tinting on windows to stop the sun from heating the place up in summer. It did work dandy for keeping the heat back and saved on runnin the AC.
You can see out of it well but sure stops from seeing inside. I know cause I had to stop what I was doing, to come in to see what was going on inside.
What I did use tho, was an extra set of window to put it on, so I could take them off when not needed and wanted the sun in.
Not sure of the cost today, as this was done years ago.
Apart from that..... sheer curtains, but the cats my think you put it there for their amusement. 😉
A sense of humor is absolutely essential to survival.
thank you
the cats think the curtains are play things now 👿
the main issue is the fact that once they are "done" looking out the window, the curtain stays open and it is porch level. Anyone walking by can see inside the house.
I cut to size, an 'emergency blanket' from the dollar store and used 2 sided tape all around the edges, also from the dollarama - mirrored side to the outside and you can see right through it from the inside. Oldschool, I think you initially gave me that idea last year! It worked beautifully in the summer to keep the hot sun out - I removed it on some windows for the winter.
I did this at an apartment that I rented for the bedroom window (night shift worker). When I moved out I had to use a razor to scrap the film from the window, even though I had only spot taped it on the outer edge. But it did work well for a little money.

😳 yep but the cats don't like it 😡
I can't get it flat against the window so figured since my neighbor made a comment about the curtains being "left open" by the cats and the issues that another neighbour is having I had better do something about it that the cats will leave up....stupid cats 😆
To get it to lay flat, wet the window first. Tape it at the top and use a sponge to lay it down, apply like wall paper.

😆 wall paper is suppose to be flat? you better come show me
Could you apply it to the outside?

maybe
if the stuff comes off the window easily, then it might not be a good idea but I will try it
thank you

One way (mirrored) privacy film might be what you are looking for.....

Even with mirror film it has to be darker inside the house than outside. If the lights are on indoors they won't work.
Some cheap blinds might do the job just as well. My cats are fine looking through them- adjust the angle so outsiders can't see in.

Does the car window tinting have the same issue with the light as the mirror film?
one of my cats actually ate through the blinds 👿 If I can find the picture I will post it. Not funny from my point of view but I am sure to others it would be. The cat has a "who me" look on his face with a bit of "ha, that's what you get for putting those blinds up"
They do have a mind of their own, can't argue that one. We've never had a problem with them but I did get tired of those flimsy blinds. We bought some that are plastic but the slats are 1/8" or thicker. You'll know what cat is doing it by the broken teeth..
a hair dryer will make the film go flat, just don't heat it too much.
