Good Day to all - Looking for advice here /// Recently parted ways with an old time friend - (Linda, my Marlin 336 in 30 .30) & intend on replacing her with a Marlin 1894 in either .44 or .357. Does anyone have any practical expirience, pros or cons with this platform?
Why did you let her go? That was an excellent all around rifle.
The ones you are talking about replacing her with are very American Rifles, you may have problems sourcing parts and equipment for them up here. Send Taz an email, he works in a Gun Shop in Alberta, so next door to you! 🙂
As with everything, you need to look at what the end result you want out of the firearm is, the type of land or bush to be used in etc.
The .357 has a flatter trajectory than the .44, so may be a bit better in the bush. It is also more of a drilling round, where as the 44 is a heavier hitter. -. Man o Man, you like the big bang noise though don't you!

Had her from new since 1982 & pushed literaly 1000's of rounds down the tube - guess you could say she was a little on the worn side 😮 /// Always been a fan of the .357 (had a S&W 19 back in the day) and looking to cover out to 100 yrds with something fast & manageable /// have lot's of expirience with speed loading lever guns on the fly & like the 10 round capacity that a pistol cartridge provides in this platform /// shots over 100 yrds are handled with my Rem 700P in .300 mag anyways /// on the other hand .44 has some great sheer stopping power behind it at close range, hence my problem /// as far as the big bang goes - it's a sweet life & a good day with a purple shoulder & the smell of cordite in my nose 😆
Appreciate the input Wild_E & thanks for the lead on TAZ

Hoping I helped and great response.
Look to different bullet head configurations for the .357 some will give you more stopping power and some more drilling effect. If you load your own, then this is the way to go. Keep in mind that the handgun .38 fits in the .357, I think that certain carbines will accept the .38 as well, need to check with the manufacturer. There is an American Gun forum, just for these types of carbines and handguns. Looked but could not find the link, sorry. You could try the GunNutz forum as well, lots of noteworthy info there as well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Wild_E.
With either of the two guns, remember to order now, any spare parts you may need in the future. Right now the American gun manufacterers are running at max capacity so you may have a bit of a wait before the parts get to you. As for which caliber would be better, I'd choose the .357, that's because I believe that placement trumps size. Also, we use both .357 and 44 mag on the range all the time and the .357s far outlast the .44s. For every .357 cal. gun we replace, we've replaced the .44s about 3 times on average. Because of the extra power, the .44s require replacement parts and guns way more often. .357 is more comfortable to shoot, .38s will often work well in a .357 platform and you can carry more bullets if need be. I would take a .357 over a .44 any day of the week and for purpose.

Thanks TAZ & Wild_E /// You both have been a great help / going to go with .357
Hey taz what store do you work in Edmonton maybe I can order some guns through you

Just saw this post, and was curious what gun you ended up buying ? Just thought I would mention that a interesting alternative would be a semi auto non restricted carbine that uses handgun magazines would be a interesting alternative for a nice light carbine, that would really allow quick follow up shots. A few manufacturers make non restricted carbines that use glock, berreta, or 1911 magazines chambered in either 9m, 40sw or 1911. A 10 round magazine can be used also, since they are meant for a handgun. 10 rounds of 40sw out of a 18.5" barrel would give similar performance that a 357 mag carbine has, or a 9mm model would be cheap to practise shooting, but using +p loads for hunting would work good on a deer at close range.

Hi Blueflash - thannks for the input / ended up ordering the Marlin 1894 in .357 this weekend / first off not a fan of semi autos - too many parts & not as accurate as I like, secondly a lever carbine is pretty close to about as non threatening in appearance as they come, lastly you would be surprised at what can be achieved with a lever action in skilled hands in so far as follow up shots, accuracy, reliability & reloading time

Hi Duffman:
I work at the Wild West Shooting Centre in the West Edmonton Mall. I'm not a salesman, I run the shooting range.
Being in Lethbridge, you might want to try shopping for guns at Marksman Sports. I've known the owner (Ted Feller)
for over twenty years. He's a great guy and he'll do his level best to get you what you want. When I lived in
Lethbridge and Cranbrook, he was the only one I would buy my guns from.
